Hi and welcome to Day 13 of my series about developing an awareness of God’s presence! You can refer back to Day 1 if you’d like to know my backstory for the series.

I encourage you to read all the posts in the series if you are just joining us. Each day’s assignment builds on the previous assignments, and they are all vitally important! (Be sure to subscribe to receive my daily posts so you won’t miss anything.)

Today is all about another check-and-balance that will help you distinguish God’s voice from all others.

That check-and-balance is called FLOW.

God loves to help you out with your day. And you can always tell it’s Him speaking to you because, when He’s in something, there will be FLOW.

    For example: Most Saturdays, I’m at home doing stuff I enjoy. It’s my “me time.” Saturday mornings just fill my tank. 🙂

    But I always have so much to do that I need God’s help with getting it all done. So when I’m praying (during my morning quiet time), I always ask God to show me what to do that day, and what order to do it in. To help me be super-productive, peaceful, calm, and restful, all at the same time.

    And He does.

    When I ask Him what to do first, I just listen for that still, small voice we talked about yesterday. His voice is spontaneous; it’s usually the very first thing that comes to mind.

    Sometimes He says what I expected Him to say, like “Go ahead and blog first.” But sometimes it’s not what I expected: like, “I need you to clean out the garage now.” 🙁

    I have to admit that, when I have heard Him tell me things I didn’t want to do–like cleaning out the garage–I have occasionally **tried** to convince myself that it wasn’t God that told me that. You know, “I must be just hearing my own self talking! Surely God wouldn’t want me to clean out the garage!”

    But whenever I have tried to squirm out of it, something instantly happens: the FLOW goes away. I suddenly feel confused. Nothing seems to work. I’m irritable and grumpy and can’t figure out what to do next.

    As soon as I recognize that the fruit of the Spirit is gone (remember, we’re learning to use the Word of God and the fruit of the Spirit as our ‘true north’), it forces me to go back to the point where I lost that fruit.

    Which, in the example above, was when I said “no'” to cleaning out the garage. 🙂

    So then I get my act together, and I go clean out the garage. And the funniest thing happens…

    As soon as I start to obey what God told me to do, there’s FLOW again!

    I suddenly feel happy again! I have direction and I’m not confused! Everything seems to work! Cleaning out the garage becomes easy and fun! It doesn’t take half as long as I thought it would take, and I just seem to have a special ability to do it, and do it right!

    The special ease and rightness that comes when you’re in the center of God’s will is called “flow.”

    Flow can be used as a measure to help us gauge whether we are in the center of God’s will or not. It works for both big decisions (“Should I teach this class?”) and small decisions (“Should I blog or hang out with my husband?”)

    And of course, if we listen to God the first time He speaks, and we do what He tells us to do, then we never have to lose that flow. We can go through our entire day in the divine flow of God. Everything will get done, and it will be easier than you ever dreamed. Wonderful things will happen and you’ll have a positive attitude. You’ll feel loving, joyful, peaceful, contented, etc.

    So here’s your assignment for Day 13:

    No matter where you are right now, ask God if He would direct your steps the rest of the day. Then ask Him what task to take on next.

    Listen for His still, small voice (the one you heard yesterday). Measure what you hear against the checks and balances of God’s Word and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. When you have good reason to believe it’s God, then do whatever He has told you to do.

    And sit back and notice the flow.

    Can you feel Him giving you peace, and making your task easy?

    That’s God! He talked to you about what to do next, and He’s helping you do it!

    WAHOOOO! Isn’t that cool? Congratulations! You heard God!

      I’ve tried to hear God talking to me, but I can’t hear him. He doesn’t answer my questions. I would like him to answer me, because I pray a lot and I read the bible every day, but I hear nothing.

      1. I think as Christians we all experience moments or “seasons” like this. My advise is to Not give up! Find a scripture to meditate on for the day. I love and use Philippians 4:8…
        “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
        If I find myself getting caught up in negative thinking, etc. this scripture helps me get back to my reality as a child of God. We serve a loving and might God that is always with us, whether we feel him or not. Hang in there, dear, and know that you are loved and NEVER alone!❤

I feel your frustration…..I was the same way and also ready to give up…it was a very daunting thing trying to hear and feeling like you were not good enough or spiritual enough…….I KNOW now that He talks to all of us all the time but we are not in tune to hear Him……I learned and understood …..then actually DID HEAR HIS SMALL QUIET VOICE !!!! but only after I watched the video that Jamie has on line on hearing God’s voice…it is explained in a simple way and made total sense …. please check her site…find that video she offered on line because it was the key to me hearing God’s voice….I now hear Him all the time….I only watched it 3 weeks ago……..best wishes…..it might be on youtube as well ..not sure

      It is so good when God is in control. My day was so easy to day with God telling what to start with, I ended up going to the gym at last while I had planned to start with. Thanks Jamie
