Do You Have an Inheritance Word?

Next LIVE webinar: Healing from the Trauma of Poverty|April 3, 2024

An inheritance word is a special gift from God. Ask God for your inheritance word today, and He will give you one! By Jamie Rohrbaugh | FromHisPresence.comHey beloved, guess what? God has an inheritance word for you, and today’s post will tell you how to find out what it is. 🙂

First, what is an inheritance word?

An inheritance word is a passage of Scripture that God speaks into your heart as His special gift to you forevermore.

It’s not the same as a Scripture that describes your calling. I have several of those, but they are not my inheritance word.

Your inheritance word describes something that God wants to be to you (in relationship), or something that He wants to do for you. It’s a promise He makes to you. It’s an expression of His love and watchcare over you for the rest of your life.

Your inheritance word will comfort you.

It will grip your heart so much that you will be able to stand on it, even when you don’t have the courage to stand on anything else.

Several years ago, I was going through a really tough time and I heard Graham Cooke mention his inheritance word in a sermon. I asked God for my own inheritance word, and this is what He gave me:

Start-quoteI will lift up my eyes to the hills—
    From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
    Who made heaven and earth.

    He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
    Behold, He who keeps Israel
    Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

    The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
    Nor the moon by night.

    The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
    He shall preserve your soul.
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore (Psalm 121:1-8).

I have meditated on this passage over and over since then. It means so much to me. Whenever I hear the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir song, “My Help,” that goes along with it, I cry like a baby.

God had my number when He spoke this passage to me. It’s His covenant with me to take care of me, no matter what. Even if I’m hurting, I know from my inheritance word that the Lord will keep me.

So would you like an inheritance word of your own?

    Here’s how to get one:

    1. Get alone with God.
    2. Ask God to give you an inheritance word.
    3. Open your Bible.
    4. Read.

As you seek God about your inheritance word, He will show you a passage that will make you cry, laugh, whisper, or all three. When He does, ask Him if this is your inheritance word, and you will hear his response.

You will love that passage the rest of your life. It will calm you, comfort you, lift you up, encourage you, and grip your heart. You can claim it whenever you are feeling down. You can pray it when you are going through hard times.

Your inheritance word will become your story.

Are you ready for God to give you your inheritance word? If so, won’t you get alone with Him and ask Him for it today?

And when He gives you your word, would you let me know your report in the comments below? I’d love to hear about it!

      Hi Jamie,

I don’t have my Bible with me now here however, this really touches me because I have this quote/words from the Scripture, when I hear it, it just brings hope and strength in me. So, I don’t want to say it is my inheritance word until The Master reveals and talk it in me.

Yes, thank you so much for making this a reality because all of us have this word that just sum all up.

God revealed to me that Nahum 2 contains both my inheritance and my calling! So excited!! Thank you for your courage to follow the LORD in this ministry.

Nahum 2: New American Standard Bible (NASB)

      The Overthrow of Nineveh
1The one who scatters has come up against you.
      Man the fortress, watch the road;
Strengthen your back, summon all your strength.
2 For the Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob
      Like the splendor of Israel,
Even though devastators have devastated them
      And destroyed their vine branches.
3 The shields of his mighty men are colored red,
The warriors are dressed in scarlet,
The chariots are enveloped in flashing steel
When he is prepared to march,
And the cypress spears are brandished.
4 The chariots race madly in the streets,
They rush wildly in the squares,
      Their appearance is like torches,
They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
      5 He remembers his nobles;
      They stumble in their march,
      They hurry to her wall,
And the mantelet is set up.
6 The gates of the rivers are opened
      And the palace is dissolved.
      7 It is fixed:
She is stripped, she is carried away,
And her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves,
      Beating on their breasts.
8 Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days,
      Now they are fleeing;
      “Stop, stop,”
      But no one turns back.
      9 Plunder the silver!
      Plunder the gold!
For there is no limit to the treasure—
Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
10 She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and waste!
Hearts are melting and knees knocking!
Also anguish is in the whole body
And all their faces are grown pale!
11 Where is the den of the lions
And the feeding place of the young lions,
Where the lion, lioness and lion’s cub prowled,
      With nothing to disturb them?
12 The lion tore enough for his cubs,
      Killed enough for his lionesses,
And filled his lairs with prey
And his dens with torn flesh.
13 “Behold, I am against you,” declares the Lord of hosts. “I will burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.”

    15. I am confused. God led me to Psalm109 20-31. The wounded heart. Is God telling me that He will cause shame to manifest in the hearts of those that wrong me in order to set things right and bring more order to my life? I always feel blessed but I admit I have had a rough time dealing with some people although you would never know it as I try to guard against showing my struggle. I was bullied for many years as a child and even at work , have experienced it. That said, God has greatly blessed me with a very loving, trustworthy husband and a best friend I can totally count on and successful children, but still the wounded heart passage made me cry. I go to counselling and have told my Christian counselor that I really need to gauge my reactions to people around me because many have been difficult and I try really hard to not over react and to be kind in the face of adversity for the Lord’s sake and also I have compassion. My own bad experiences make me careful not to do harm.

    16. Thank you for I have my inheritance word that my Lord gave me . Proverbs 3:5 thanks again God bless you love u in Christ.

    17. Thank you ?
I have a word that Dick Mills wrote across the palm of my hand in th ’80’s , which is relevant for today as well as back then
      It was Joel 2:25
And I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten , the cankerworm, the caterpillar and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.”

I think it might be OK to have another word in addition , but isn’t it interesting that God takes the credit for things we immediately blame the devil for .
He works His nature in us through our trials and losses, but there comes a time for abundance and it’s NOW

    18. Susan Jones says:

While I was still reading your word I asked the Lord for my inheritance word. He started speaking to me immediately and gave me scriptures from three or four sections in the Bible. Thanks!

    19. Marilyn Bucci says:

Psalms 27:13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

    20. Linny O'Hara says:

Years ago when I was doing a study on the names of GOD, I was blest to find this one Messianic study of the Hebrew names of GOD which highlighted Psalm 121:1-2. In the passage, “my help comes from the LORD,” the Hebrew name used here is HaMoshiach. The main translation is “The Living Son of the Living GOD;” but depending on how it is written and where it is in a sentence, it can have additional meanings, as well. In this case, HaMoshiach also means “The Great Mountain, He Who is Exalted Above All Others.”

    21. I immediately heard Psalm 23 as soon as I asked him to give me a inheritance word I heard “The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want”. That scripture has been ringing in my spirit for months now. Thank you Father for always being so faithful and you Jamie for always listening and feeding us that manna from heaven!!!

    22. Terri Cox says:

got mine during one of the consecration nights at Dwelling Place Church International.. it’s Psalm 139 in the Passion Translation… I cant even read the entire chapter before I am weeping and by the end I am totally messed up in His presence!

    23. Jamie, God has given me 7 very important inheritance words:
Psalm 32:7-8; Zech. 2:5; Isaiah 41:10-13; Zeph. 3:17; John 1:12-13 & John 14:26 & newest one Genesis 9:12-17. Then the song you gave us from Presence Seekers Beyond the veil~ Come Unto Me.
Thank you and God Bless your ministry 1000 times more!!

    24. Jamie, I didn’t know I had an inheritance Word until just now as I came across your message on it. Perfect timing! We have been fighting for my son for 2.5 years regarding serious health issues plus other issues regarding his spiritual health. I was writing to my sister all that had happened to him those past 2.5 years but at the end I began to write down all God had done for him these 2.5 years. One of the verses I have consistently stood on and proclaimed for him is Isaiah 54:17: No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper ;….. only I add his name in. I wrote this down at the end and it hit my spirit! It went within me! I looked at what I written and saw that all the things he had gone through including 2 death sentences by the doctors had never came to maturity – nothing had prospered!!! I began to cry and laugh and I know God has given me a new strength and a new stronger faith. I now know that is my inheritance Word and am I ever thankful!!!

    25. Have been so blessed by “My Help” sung by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Jesus is so faithful and answers our prayers for His help.

    26. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
      Isaiah 41:10 KJV

    30. Karin Przybilski says:

      Hi Jamie,

Thank you for the encouraging words to seek God about our inheritance word! When I asked Him for my inheritance word He showed me this scripture verse:

      Isaiah 40:31

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

When and as I read these words I felt comforted, assured and happy to know that God is and will always be the strength of my life and that He will always help me to arise and mount up as an eagle and fly through every trial that I may face in my life!

Wishing you and yours a Very Merry Christmas & a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year 2021! 🙂

    31. Teresa Gelant says:

      Hi Jamie
Thank you for this beautiful word. I never thought that there the scripture God gave me was an inheritance word. Mine is Joshua 1v9. Everytime I had to give someone a word or do something or I went through somwthing I would get Joshua 1v9. It always amazes me how often I would get it in one day.
      Now I know.
      I will cherish that scripture.
Pray over it again. Maybe God is calling me to be a Joshua for a time like this.

      Thank you

      Keeping you in my prayers.

      Blessings.
      Teresa

    32. Mine is Isaiha 45. It’s now for 10+ years that I got that from Papa Father and through all the seasons I go through I always return to that passage in my Bible. Thank you Jamie for being a rollmodel in my life. There were times in my life that your blogs just lift me up and put me back on the road again. Thanks that you are a blessing in my life. I pray that Father will keep on blessing you.

    33. Francie Robertson says:

Mine I have entitled “THE BITTER POOL.” As soon as I came here the tears & sobs came forth not even knowing my inheritance verse/s. Immediately I realised I had them in my laptop in a folder named “THE TREASURE CHEST.”
The year is 1994. They are 3 scriptures all joined together into a perfect tapestry (gold and black) of God’s Love and Mercy. Starts with Exodus 15 : 22-27 (THE BITTER WATERS MADE SWEET) next with special emphasis, HOSEA 2: 14-16 (THE VALLEY OF ACHOR), then EXODUS 30: 22-33 (THE ANOINTING OIL).
Lord started me off with EXODUS 15: 22-27 which I was living in, then 2 weeks later led me livingly into the next two scriptures with a spectacular confirmation from Dr Derek Prince. Here’s what he said on the radio.
DEREK PRINCES MESSAGE: SPRING 1 SEPTEMBER 1994: “THE BITTER POOL”
“God brings us to the BITTER POOL.
God wants to put a SONG in our hearts. The BITTER pool will be made SWEET again.
The ANOINTING OIL has ingredients that comprise both BITTER & SWEET. These ingredients are very RARE.
God Himself CHOOSES our anointing ingredients for us.
Our lifes experiences comprise God appointed ingredients that are at first very BITTER but from out of the hard stuff comes HIS SWEETNESS. We become a sweet smelling offering. THAT’S A PROMISE BOTH STEADFAST AND SURE FROM WHICH TO REST OUR HOPE.
In the VALLEY OF ACHOR (Hosea 2 ‘Achor’ means ‘trouble’) there is a DOOR OF HOPE from which we will emerge.
I have been singing His Praises ever since through both the bitter and sweet. AND THE SWEET (HIS RESURRECTION LIFE AND POWER) just keeps getting better and better because of the BETTER COVENANT BASED on BETTER PROMISES!!! WOOHOO!!!
Thank you Jamie for bringing God’s HELPS! Better get that BLOG and BOOK BUSINESS thing underway for 2021!!!

    34. What an on time word of confirmation! Ps 41:10. 7 promises in one! What a reinforcement. Hod Bless You Jaime!!

    35. Brittne Aigne' Epps says:

Amen! Thank YOU FATHER! My inheritance Word is Isaiah 43:1-2!!

    37. Hi Jamie! I just did this and I opened up to Deuteronomy 29. Verse 8 uses the word “inheritance” ..that was interesting to me. Then verse 9 does speak to me..to keep the words of His covenant. I do strive for that daily! So not sure if I did this correctly but just wanted to see if you had any thoughts on where I was led? Thanks & happy new year love!

    38. Ernesco G. says:

    39. Thank you Jamie for your encouragement I prayed and asked God what was my intentions word I’ll open my Bible to psalms 141 thank you Father and thank you Jesus amen.

    40. While I was reading this post, Psalm 25 immediately came to mind. It’s one of my favourite passages. Also, while I was thinkging about it, God told me it was the highlighted verse. The first time I came across this verse, it immediately gripped my heart. Meant to be! And Psalm 25 is at the top of the list I compiled of my favourite passages/verses (not too long ago, I thought that it’s time to write them somewhere I can reach to easily instead of always struggling to remember or search in the Bible app). Thank you, God! Thank you, Jamie!

    41. IRMA NORTJE says:

AMEN, PS 121 and JER 29:11, is also a light unto my path, thank you Jamie, God bless you and Ministry.
