Radical Prayer #15: Lord, Show Me a Sign for Good

Next LIVE webinar: Healing from the Trauma of Poverty|April 3, 2024

Are you desperate today? Desperate to hear God, desperate for breakthrough, desperate to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that what you’re going through is going to work out all right? If so, it’s time to pray “Lord, show me a sign for good!”

We shouldn’t always need a sign in order to move on with God.

However, there are times when we are raw, hurting, desperate, and even bleeding. In those times, it can be really helpful and encouraging–healing, even!–if something happens that demonstrates God’s love and watchcare over our lives–if we get a sign.

When we need a sign, it’s not that we don’t know He’s there. It’s simply that we need a touch from our precious Abba Father. We need hugs from our Papa. We need to lean on His chest, feel His arms around us, and hear Him whisper that everything’s going to be all right.

And that’s why it’s okay to say, “Lord, show me a sign for good!”

In the Bible, King David prayed this. It’s in Psalm 86:16-17, and it says:

Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me! Give Your strength to Your servant, and save the son of Your maidservant.

Show me a sign for good, that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, because You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me” (Psalm 86:16-17).

This is the same psalm in which David asked God to unite his heart to fear God’s name. It’s a psalm that starts out with a plea for help:

Bow down Your ear, O Lord, hear me; for I am poor and needy.

Preserve my life, for I am holy; you are my God; save Your servant who trusts in You!

Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I cry to You all day long. Rejoice the soul of Your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul” (Psalm 86:1-4).

But notice that David doesn’t only beg for help in this psalm. He also confesses his faith:

For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, for You will answer me. Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; nor are there any works like Your works.

All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God” (Psalm 86:5-10).

And because David confessed his faith, we know that he was hurting–but he still believed God would answer him and reward him.

    THAT is an essential point.

It’s essential because it doesn’t do any good to come before God and whine. Whining results from doubt and unbelief, and let not the person who doubts think he will receive anything from the Lord (James 1:6-7).

If you’re walking in doubt and unbelief, our Father isn’t going to reward you by dumping all kinds of blessings on you. The blessing He’s going to dump on you first is discipline and delay, so He can teach you that you need to trust Him.

Ouch. Selah. #PreachingToTheChoir … This is for me too!

In one of the hardest times of my life, I asked God WHY.

Why didn’t He fix it? Why didn’t He set things right? Why did He see my agony and not snap His fingers, making it all go away?

Do you ever wonder why God allows you to suffer?

If so, Jamie’s audio MP3, Understand Your Suffering, is for you. In this 49-minute teaching, Jamie teaches what she learned during her personal story of extreme pain. You will learn:

    • How to look at suffering through the eyes of God.
    • The Father’s purpose for suffering; and
    • The truth from God’s Word about why a good God sometimes allows us to suffer.

If you’re suffering, God has a purpose for your pain.

Listen to this powerful message, and receive hope that, one day, you will look back and say, “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

And you know what? He answered me. This is what He said:

And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:2-3).

    That answer helped me tremendously.

He showed me that the purpose of the hard time was to burn some things off me. It was a fire that purged me of my dependence on emotions, on signs, and on what I could see. It was a fire that taught me that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

I learned my lesson the hard way. I’ve never been the same, and I wouldn’t trade that hard lesson for the world.

That’s why I say we can’t depend on signs.

We do not live by bread alone. We do not live by what we can see or feel or know in our brain. We HAVE to live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. We must live by faith. That’s the only way to go forward with God. Never think you’ll get anything from God if you come to Him in doubt and unbelief.

But He IS a God who works signs when we come to Him from a position of faith, rather than doubt.

And if you come to Him believing Him …

… and believing that He’s working everything together for your good, but you just could use a little reassurance and a Papa-hug …

… and if you ask Him for a sign for good …

He will give it to you.

Again, He’s usually not going to give you a sign if you depend on the sign! He’s teaching you to trust! He’s too good to reward your doubt and unbelief! James 1:6-7:

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

But when we are already standing in faith and we just need a little encouragement, it’s all right to ask Father God for a sign.

And when we ask, He will answer. He will help us see His hand at work. He will show us what He’s doing. And what He shows us, even if it’s only a little glimpse, will encourage us. It will be like a big fat hug that reassures and comforts us.

The Pre-Incarnate Christ, the Angel of the Lord, and Melchizedek

Did you know that Christ appeared in person over and over again in the Old Testament? It’s true! And if you’re only reading the New Testament, you’re missing out on so many revelations of Him!

In this powerful Bible study, we explore many visitations of the Pre-Incarnate Christ recorded in the Old Testament. This class will enrich your understanding of God’s Word–and of His love for us!

Are you standing in faith, but you just need a sign right now? If so, pray this with me:

“Father God, I come before you in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, Papa God, I love You. I believe You and everything in Your Word. I know You are working all things out for my good. I know Your hand is at work in my situation. I know You will provide all my needs according to Your riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

But Father God, I need comfort right now. Show me a sign for good, Lord.

Papa God, I ask that Holy Spirit would comfort me right now. Wrap Your arms around me and hug me. Help me to feel Your love, Your Presence, and Your affection. Help me to sense that You are right here with me.

Father, please help me to be anxious for nothing; but in everything, with prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, help me to make my requests known to You; and let Your peace, which passes all understanding, guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

And Abba Father, show me a sign for good.

Show me Your hand at work in my situation. Show me what You are thinking and doing. Help me to see Your plans for me, and see how You are preparing both me AND Your plans. Show me how You are using me, and what Your plans are for my life.

I’m calling upon You, Father, and Your Word promises that if I call upon You, You will show me great and mighty things that I do not know. So show me those great and mighty things TODAY, Lord. Send me inside information that only You could tell me. Reassure me and comfort me, Father. Lift me up as I humble myself before You and Your Word, standing in faith.

Father God, You are not a man that You should lie.

I know it is impossible for You to be found wanting or lacking in any area. You are good, and You reign supreme, and You are faithful. Great is Your faithfulness, O God my Father.  There is no shadow of turning with You! I want You to be honored in my life. I want to obey You in all things, and I want to give You glory.

So glorify Your own name in me, Father God.

Glorify Jesus in my life. Help me to be a good and faithful servant. Help me to persevere in all things, and help me to dwell in the secret place of the Most High with You. Keep me as the apple of Your eye and hide me under the shadow of Your wings. And as I abide in You, keep me stable and fixed under Your shadow.

Thank You, Jesus. Thank You, Father and Holy Spirit. Thank You for comforting me. Thank You for the sign You are showing me today. Open my eyes and help me to see everything You are showing me, and I give You all the praise.

    In Jesus’ name, amen.”

    15. HALLELUJAH! Yes, in the name of Jesus it was through radical prayer…praying with supplication and thanksgiving, believing and receiving God’s favor…. yes we just received
A breakthrough…we accepted the offer for our home even though it was far less than asking price plus the buyers wanted all the furniture. My husband and I feel that by letting go of everything to move from Florida to Tennessee will be a huge blessing and we will be totally 100% dependent on God. God sent a cash buyer and now they will enjoy what God blessed us with for the last 15 years and we feel a complete release and look forward to a new season in our lives. Thank you precious sister for your Shepherding, for your encouraging words, for your patience, for your love and prayers. All Glory to God my Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit.

    16. This is too good not to share. We’ve officially become homesteaders amongst all of lifes happenings. We have eight laying chickens (that laid their first eggs on a Sunday a few months ago). Goats for milk and cheese are on that list…soon hopefully. But, Guinness Hens are a bird I read about that we’d like because they are great at alerting us to possible “intruders”, (chicken eaters). What appeared in our yard today!! Yup a pair of guinnea hens. They sound very loud and if I can say majestic…sure they belong to a neighbor but I HAVE to smile because God knows…
Also have seen 3:16 twice this past week and just heard the anointing breaks the yolk of bondage for all we come into contact with. My spirit aches for family but my philosophy is there are those who know Him and those who don’t know Him YET. One day every knee will bow (need to find the context that was written in but that gives me hope)…working out my own salvation too and so grateful for the warriors in my life…I didn’t earn nor deserve and coming to understand how it’s JUST the cross and Him crucified. and we aren’t supposed to stay on that cross like Eeyore but to be risen…and run the race. (Realizing there is a time to grieve)
One last thing. I think I’ve heard Him say that all the tears will be counted joy on harvest day.
      Lots of love!

      1. Yes Lord, I need a sign

    17. Emmanuel Segun says:

I believe that the prayers has worked for me. My life and my all belongs to God and God will glorify His name in my life and situation. Amen. Thank you sir for this prayers my life needs the big hug and assurance from God.

    18. Hi Jamie! These are truly timely prayers! I am in a situation where I will need a place to stay until my townhouse is finished. I have been asking God where he would have me to go. I did get a hotel room from the beginning of April until Mid-May. It’s going to be pretty expensive, but I am trusting and waiting on MY God for a sign. I count it all joy for the blessings that He has blessed me with in my life! He is so amazing and incredibly faithful! Jamie I send Love and Blessings to you and yours’
in the Mighty Name of Jesus! It’s a new season and it’s a new day!

    19. Helo, please pray for my sister, she is undergoing brain surgery now and I need her to be ok…….what you write here inspires me alot and may God bless you. Sheko from kenya

    24. korean piper says:

      Dear Jamie,

My husband is cruel, harsh, prone to anger, rage and violence.

I’m a Christian girl from birth and have had a happy childhood, lacking in nothing.

I often think back of the first half of my life as it was filled with joy. I got married in my early 20s so I’ve been suffering for 20 years.

He gets mad when a mistake is pointed out. Something as simple as telling him not washing fruits before refrigerating them got him into a flying rage and he threw the entire box into the bin.

Aside from that, he has indulged in tremendous sin – sleeping with countless prostitutes and always on the prowl for new women to try out. And yet, he despises such women and expects his wife to be of a high calibre.

Both of us are successful working adults and I have an inheritance that would suffice in my lifetime. However, he is unaware of this as I feel that this is my last back-up plan should anything go awry and that he would surely try to weasel his way into it by pressuring me into shared investments (eg buying another house or starting a business with him etc). And so, I often feign being tight with money, which makes him think that he is superior as he pays for half the things. Little does he know the truth.

He has choked, slapped, hurt me physically and emotionally repeatedly till I’m tired of it. I cried to the Lord earlier, asking him to let him die peacefully (i know this is sinful) so that I can live a new life with purpose instead of being imprisoned in this emotional jail.

He can indulge in carnal activities but goes to church with me the very next day as if nothing has happened. He listens and quotes sermons but lives his life without believing in reaping consequences.

He is a risk-taker financially, loves horror and supernatural movies, flies into a rage if I try to stop him and has no self-control.

His family is estranged with him and the few friends that he has are no longer in talking term with him. He’s quiet and smiles affably. On the other hand, I am boisterous and extroverted, am the apple of a large extended family (200+ relatives on both sides) and I wear my heart on my sleeve. I’m also known to be altruistic and help many people in need as taught by my mother.

As such, people often think that he is the proverbial quiet good man when the truth is anything but. I’ve landed in hospital once after a lash out and have countless items damaged by him as he smashes things when he is angry. (6 pairs of glasses have been damaged in a decade. My glass table has broken into 3 large chunks and is held with tape, countless of food items have been thrown away because he flew into a rage at that moment etc)

      I’m tired, Jamie.
      I’m tired after 20 years.

I’ve tried to tolerate him for all these decades but I think I have reached breaking point.

Dear God, i have run the race and fought the good fight, keeping your commandments close and always following what the Bible says instead of what I want.

These 20 years have been eroding me, God. Help. Take this man away from me and let me live a life of purpose focused on you instead of having this man suck out the life of me. Amen.

      1. Sweetheart, thank you for sharing. May I ask: Why on earth are you still with this man? God doesn’t expect you to stay with him. Jesus said you are free if your spouse commits adultery. You are not obligated to stay in this marriage. And whether you stay in this marriage or not, PLEASE GET OUT OF THE HOUSE and to a safe place where this man cannot harm you, and make any necessary decisions and steps from that safe place. DO NOT BECOME A WORSE STATISTIC than you already are.
Please, get out and get to a safe place. And then follow the path that aligns with God’s Word and will bring righteousness, peace, and joy into your life, which are the Kingdom of God.
        Love,
        Jamie

Apologies. i started a new comment instead of replying to your earlier reply.
My reply is below. Thank you, Jamie.

    25. Korean Piper says:

      Jamie,

Please pray for me to have the courage.
I’m an only child and my dad has heart problems. When we argued in the past in his presence, my dad would get stressed and needed to take medication. He expects us to lead a happy life and so, in his presence, I laugh a lot and act like I’m carefree.

Tonight, I broke my mirror when it slid off the dining table and onto the floor. It was in a crowded restaurant but all my husband could say was, “You’re such an embarrassment” when all eyes are on me and didn’t help me to pick up the shards but stared hard as I lowered myself to sweep them into my hands.

      Hurt people hurt people.

How can I expect a broken man-child unloved all his life without family and friends, to know what love and kindness are? Pain & destruction are what he’s familiar with so naturally, he only knows how to gift these.

      Jamie,

I really really really really am at the end of my worn rope. Today’s sermon was about forgiveness but shortly after we left church, he hit me on the head and slammed a fist into my mouth. I admit that I tend to yell when I’m hurt and upset by his antics but that is no excuse for violence.

I thought God sent me to his life to help mend his brokenness. So i have been absolutely persevering despite all the persecution, mocking and violence.

      2 reasons why I haven’t left him:
      1) God hates divorce
      2) My dad would have an emotional breakdown and his health would be adversely affected.

I don’t know how I will be free from all this. I told him tonight after being hurt, “Even if you kill me now, I am going to heaven because I have been righteous and kept God’s commandments. But if you die now, you will face judgment for your sins.” That got him even madder and he threw my things onto the floor. I laughed and said, “That’s all you know because you’re broken and an unloved child.”

His family is no better – all his brothers have had entanglements with other women in their marriage, his parents had gambling debts and often borrowed from my family but ironically, his mother would mock at my family for being useless (as they do not work but contribute largely to society through volunteer work — my uncle has quietly brought up hundreds of lil children by providing them with pocket money for decades, etc) and his mother herself has issues with everyone including my husband —- none of her children sees her on a regular basis and all of her sons-in-law & daughters-in-law are problematic in her eyes).

A good tree bears good fruit but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A toxic mother produces toxic children who then go on to have toxic marriages.

I can only say that having been brought up in a joyous & happy family and lacking nothing financially has led to a sheltered life and I didn’t realise how toxic humans can be. I have friends who aren’t rich but they are kind & diligent. My husband & his family are truly the first toxic people I’ve encountered that impact my life.

      When, Lord?

I’m only here because I wish to obey You, Lord.

How can my misery end without any loss on any end? I have no answer. Only God knows.

      2. I pray for the blood of Jesus to cover your family
May the Light that heals be what the toxicity experiences. Walls break down under the blood and dissolve to be established no more. Rise Spirit of God and find the one who belongs to the 100. Blessed are the Peacemakers for they are Your children, comfort this loved one as she laughs in the face of the enemy knowing that You are the One who holds her future in victory. Thank you, Father in Heaven for the witness that comes forth from this beloved one. May there be another John G. lake to arise from her circumstance as she practices the Love You called her to be casting out fear. Thank You for the joy set before her. In Yeshua hamashiach’s holy holy name. Amen.
