The Sevenfold Holy Spirit: The Spirit of Yahweh | by Jamie Rohrbaugh | FromHisPresence.com

We are studying the Holy Spirit in this article series, and today we’re going to begin talking about the sevenfold Holy Spirit.

As we are getting to know the Holy Spirit, we have to understand that knowing Him is an infinite pursuit. God is infinite. No one title can ever completely display or describe everything He is. No one word or name can ever be good enough to demonstrate His entire nature. There is always more of Him to know! 🙂

But as we get to know Him, we cannot His infinitude hinder our hunger for Him. We know that His thoughts and His ways are as far above ours as the heavens are above the earth. Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us:

    ‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

    But even though God, in His infinitude and majesty, is so far above us, that doesn’t give us license not to seek Him. Instead, we must seek to know Him in every way He has made it possible for us to know Him. For example:

    • He has revealed Himself as Savior through Jesus Christ; so we must know Him as Savior.
    • He has revealed Himself to us as Father, so we must seek to know Him as our Father.
    • He has shown Himself to be our Healer, Provider, and Comforter, so we need to chase after Him and get to know Him in all those ways too (and many, many more).

    And every time we get to know another aspect of His revealed nature, our faith grows.

    Our faith isn’t the only thing that grows, either. Our power also grows because we allow more of Him into our lives, and HE is our Strength and Power through the Holy Spirit.

    And each time we get to know another part of His personality and nature, everything low and earthly becomes that much less in our estimation, and our God gets bigger in our hearts.

    So today we’re going to begin to get to know the Holy Spirit as the Sevenfold Holy Spirit.

    The Holy Spirit is One Spirit, and He is the Third Person of the Godhead. (The other two Persons of the Godhead are God the Father and God’s Son, Jesus Christ.) However, there are several references to the Holy Spirit in the Bible that contain various titles or names for Him, showing that He demonstrates Himself in our lives in multiple ways.

    Get the book and focus on communion with God’s Holy Spirit for 12 days! Remember that He is your Helper, Comforter, and Advocate. You can’t truly know God without knowing His Holy Spirit!

    To understand how this works, just think of the many names of Jesus, such as:

    • Healer;
    • Savior;
    • Wonderful Counselor;
    • Mighty God;
    • King of Kings; and many more.

    When you call on Jesus, you may often find yourself calling on His name according to the aspect of His nature you need at that moment:

    • When you’re sick, you probably call on Jesus as Healer.
    • When you repent of your sins and give your life to Him, you call Him Savior.
    • And when you need Him to fight on your behalf, you’re likely to call Him King of Kings, Lord of Lord, and Mighty God.

    In the same way, the Holy Spirit has different names or titles that tell us who He is.

    And although all the aspects of His nature are available to us at any time, it helps us to call on Him using the name that describes what we need Him for at that exact moment!

    Isaiah 11:1-5 gives us our first glimpse of the sevenfold Holy Spirit:

    Start-quote

    There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
    and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

    The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

    His delight is in the fear of the Lord,
    and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes,
    nor decide by the hearing of His ears;

    but with righteousness He shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
    He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
    and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.

    Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,
    and faithfulness the belt of His waist.”

    The seven names of the Holy Spirit revealed in this passage are as follows:

    1. The Spirit of the Lord (name 1);
    2. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding (names 2 and 3);
    3. The Spirit of counsel and might (names 4 and 5); and
    4. The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord (names 6 and 7).

    Let’s look at His name “The Spirit of the Lord.”

    In the phrase “The Spirit of the Lord,” the words “the Lord” are actually not in the original text. The original text actually says (transliterated into English), “the Spirit of Yahweh.”

    Who is Yahweh, and who is the Spirit of Yahweh?

    Yahweh is God’s covenant name. It is His personal name; His most intimate name. “Yahweh” is the name God revealed to His covenant people, Israel, in the Bible. And He has given His people permission to call upon Him using His personal name.

    It may be hard to grasp the importance of this at first, but think of it this way. In olden times, people were not on a first-name basis with one another unless they were family. When people were introduced to one another–even women to women–they called one another by their titles: “Mrs. Smith,” “Mrs. Jones,” and so on. Sometimes even family members, such as mothers-in-law, would still be referred to by titles: “Mother Jones,” “Mother Smith,” etc.

    In those times, when people had more manners, first names were reserved for intimate relationships. If you used someone’s first name of the same gender as you, it meant you were very close. And if men and women used first names with each other, well…

    So until modern times, when manners and respect went out the door, first names were special, and they were reserved for intimate relationships.

    And for some reason, the God of the universe has told us His first name.

    His first name is Yahweh, and He tells us over and over in Scripture to call on His name. Not His title, but His name.

    So what does it mean that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Yahweh?

    Simply this: He is the Spirit of the God who is intimate with us. He is the Spirit of our covenant God. He is the Spirit of our Father who has opened Himself to us without reservation, loving us, opening His heart, and making Himself available to us in the most personal way.

    The Holy Spirit is not a spirit of some pagan, mythological god, little “g,” who sits far off in the heavens somewhere distant from the people. No. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Yahweh, the Spirit of our Father, our Daddy, our Papa, who has made us His own and has made Himself OUR OWN.

    He is ours. He is Yahweh, and we are in intimate relationship with Him through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    And the Spirit of Yahweh, our personal, covenant Papa, dwells in you.

    If you have made Jesus Christ the Boss and Master of your life, then you are filled with the Spirit of Yahweh. God Himself, Yahweh, dwells inside you. He is yours, and He dwells in you in love and intimacy.

    You belong to Him, and He belongs to you.

    Yes, that’s right. The Holy Spirit is yours, and you are His. He is Yahweh, your covenant God, your Father, and the love of your life. And you are the love of His life.

    The God of intimacy dwells in you.

    Here’s your assignment: take time to meditate on the richness of this truth today.

    Chew slowly on the beautiful truth that the Spirit of our covenant God, Yahweh, is inside you, loving you and knowing you in the most personal way. Meditate on the fact that He has opened Himself up to you, revealing His most personal nature, and allowing you to know Him in greater intimacy than you can ever know anyone else.

    Think about how beautiful it is that this Holy Spirit is Yahweh Himself, the intimate God, dwelling in your heart. Let God wreck you with His love, His nearness, and His knowing you.

    And check back later this week as we continue studying the names of the sevenfold Holy Spirit!
