“The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5 NKJV).

But first, how do you know if you are diligent or not?
Well, think about these three things:
- A diligent person knows what their responsibilities are and takes care of them.
- A diligent person watches over the things that are under their purview, sticking with a task and continuing in it as long as is required.
- Diligence also means that you are careful to observe and carry out everything that is needed in order to ensure that a project or task has the desired outcome.
Do you do that? Do you do your very best every day to steward what God has blessed you with? Do you stick with a task until it is completed? Do you take the time to figure out what it’s going to take to accomplish any given thing, and then make a plan to carry out each step?
If you do, you have an amazing legal claim in prayer, because the Lord personally tells us in His Word that, if you are diligent, your plans will lead surely to plenty.
Of course, this means we must actually HAVE plans in order for those plans to lead surely to plenty. 🙂

For some people–myself included–planning can be challenging. If I didn’t discipline myself to do it, I would never make much of a plan. My natural personality is to be more of a spontaneous, creative, and fly-with-the-wind kind of person.
However, planning things out properly is simply wisdom. We need to make plans for the things we have to do each day, each month, each year, and even further into the future.
Of course, we should submit those plans to God’s Holy Spirit to lead them and change them as He wills. But, with whatever revelation we have at the moment, we should do our best to make the best plans we can every day–trusting Jesus, our Good Shepherd, to keep us in His straight and narrow path if our plans aren’t quite what they ought to be.
What kind of plans should we have?
Well, at the very minimum, I believe we should have a ‘to do’ list for each day, as well as goals for each week, month, and year, as well as goals for 5 years out and 10 years out.
Also, we need to have plans such as:
- Bible study plans (Where are you going with your Bible study? What are you hoping to accomplish? How are you planning to grow?);
- Parenting plans (What are your goals for your children this year? How can you make progress on that every day?);
- Marriage plans (How can you and your spouse grow together in godliness and intimacy? How can you make progress on that every day?)
- Fasting and prayer plans (When do you plan to fast and pray? How do you plan to do that? What results are you asking God for?)
- Business plans (What do you need to do in your business? What routines and procedures can you set into place that will keep you advancing toward where you want to be in 5 or 10 years?)
… and that’s not even talking about things like event plans, vacation plans, and so on.
Friend, planning is just plain wisdom.
And we are supposed to get and pursue wisdom. As it says in Proverbs 4:7:
“Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding” (Proverbs 4:5-7 NKJV).
And God will give you the wisdom you need, as He tells us in James chapter 1:
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:2-8 NKJV).
And, if we will be diligent to sit down and make appropriate, Spirit-led, God-honoring plans …

… and then be diligent to execute those plans, day by day, even in the teeniest, tiniest steps known to mankind …
… then God Himself will prosper you in your plans, and your plans will lead to plenty.
Look again at this powerful Bible promise from Proverbs 21:5:
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5 NKJV).
O beloved. Being diligent is hard work, but it’s a character trait we all need to cultivate:
- We each need to practice keeping guard over the things the Lord has committed to our care, watching out for them and doing what needs to be done in order to be good stewards every single day.
- We can each also practice sticking with a thing until it’s finished. Perseverance is the name of the game!
- And we can each ask the Lord for His anointing to make wise plans.
If we will be diligent and make Spirit-led plans (which also means carrying out those plans as a function of our diligence), God will lead you into PLENTY.
Yes, God will prosper your ideas, plans, and the works of your hands when you make plans and diligently carry them out.
Not only will He prosper you and lead you into plenty, but He said that the plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty.
In other words, even though Jesus told us that, in this world, we will have tribulations (but we can be of good cheer, for He has overcome the world), God will still personally see to it that you are blessed and prospered because of your diligent execution of wise plans.
How do we know that? Because His Word promises that the plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty. Receiving plenty is not a “maybe” or a “it could happen.” No; if you are diligent, and you make plans and carry them out, then your plans will surely lead to plenty.

Of course, you don’t want to be hasty. This same Bible promise tells us that, if we are hasty (moving too fast, moving prematurely), then our hastiness will lead to poverty. We definitely don’t want that! But, diligent planning and diligent execution of those plans will still lead you to plenty.
So, what plans are you engaged in this very day? Are you:

No matter what kind of plans you are engaged in today, be encouraged! If you will be diligent to make appropriate plans and carry them out, God will bless you–and He will lead you surely into plenty.
Do you believe that the plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty?

“Dear Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ name, I boldly come before You and thank You for Your grace and mercy. Thank You for saving me, and for giving me eternal life in Christ. I praise You for Your goodness, kindness, and faithfulness to Me.
Abba Father, in Jesus’ name, I commit my plans to You today:
- Please give me wisdom by Your Holy Spirit.
- Lead me and guide me today, I pray.
- Help me to make wise, appropriate, doable, Spirit-led, practical plans for everything you need Me to do in life.
- Please help me to carry those plans out, too, Father.
- Make me diligent, and help me to look after all that needs to be done in my life–and to persevere in it, as is pleasing to You.
- Please help me not to be hasty in anything, or to move too fast or move prematurely out of Your timing. Keep me right in the center of Your perfect will, Father!
Abba Father, I fully acknowledge that, without You, I can do nothing.
But, I know that I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me. Please help me to be diligent in planning and carrying out Your plans. And, as I do, I pray that You would surely lead me right into plenty. Bring me financial abundance and provision as a result of my careful planning, and bless and prosper all the works of my hands.
Thank You, Abba Father. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. I give You all the praise and glory. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen and amen.”

Excellent explanation – I don’t think many people think of including G-d in their plans; I know that it took me a long time to realize the best laid plans can turn to nothing without Him involved (and I’ve experienced that, too).
Great encouragement to include the lord. Well my plans is to start life afresh in pension relying solely on the lord.It can get a little frustrating when you spend all your working life relying and trying to support human being who would abandon you (just like me) when the going gets tough.
