It was many years ago, but I remember it as if it were yesterday. I had just had a radical encounter with the Lord, and He had changed my life, wrecked me with His Spirit, and set me on a course that would be forever marked for Him.
Then, He gave me a new name.
The name is between Him and me alone … but He told it to me clear as a bell. It was not something I would ever have imagined or come up with on my own. It was from Him.
Why did He do it?
Because when God confirms His covenant with you, He often gives you a new name.
Here’s just one example, from Isaiah 62:4:
You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.”
The Bible contains plenty of other examples from when God changed someone’s name to match their new destiny.
Why does He do it?
- Because names carry destiny.
- Names convey inheritance.
- Names convey relationship.
- And it is our Father’s exclusive right to name you, His baby.
Many of you are entering into a new season right now, and Father wants to give you a new name.
Your new name will be a token from Him of both who you are in His eyes PLUS of what’s in store for your life. It will encourage you. It will touch your heart. It will inspire such awe that it will make you whisper.
That doesn’t mean you should legally change your name. The name God gives you has nothing to do with the name on your driver’s license or passport. But it will be a precious thing between you and Papa, and it will bless you.
