Bible Boot Camp

Angels have become a hot topic in recent years. Angel sightings, angel theories, and angel books abound. If you’re new on the angel scene or want a Biblical perspective, today’s Bible Boot Camp Lesson is all about what and who angels are.

The Bible states that there are beings in the universe whose primary dwelling place is a dimension that co-exists with ours, yet that we do not usually see. Ephesians 6:12 states: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” [1]

    This other dimension is often referred to as “the spirit world.”

    Who lives in the spirit world?

    Other than God, there are two primary types of beings that live in the spirit world: holy angels and evil/sinful angels. (Evil angels are now “demons.”) The demons were originally holy angels, but chose to sin and were cast out of Heaven with their captain, Satan, who wanted to take God’s place. [2]

    What do angels do?

    Holy angels have several functions:

    • They minister to God in worship and praise.
    • They serve God by carrying out His orders on the earth. [3]
    • They assist and defend God’s people, [4] especially when God’s people confess Scripture.
    • Angels will carry out God’s final judgments on the earth just before the second coming of Christ. (See the book of Revelation.)

    Demons and their captain, Satan, exist with the motivation to kill and destroy; [8] to hinder God’s people; [9] and to lie. [10]

    You don’t have to be afraid of the evil ones. Satan and his evil forces are already judged and condemned; Jesus won the victory over them through His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection. [11]

    So, when we abide in Christ, even though we must be on guard against attacks from evil forces, [12] we can stand strong in the spiritual armor of God [13] and win against Satan every time. Plus, the Bible tells us that there are two holy angels for every one demon (Revelation 12:4)!

    Here is one of the biggest keys about angels and the spirit world:

    There is only one God. Satan is not God’s counterpart. It’s not like God is the holy God and there’s an evil god somewhere counteracting Him, that has just as much power. No.

    Satan is only a created being who sinned and fell from Heaven. Only God has all the power in Heaven and earth! Only God is majestic and infinite and strong and omnipresent! Only God knows everything, and only God knows your thoughts.

    So focus on your Heavenly Father! Focus on Jesus and the Holy Spirit!

    God is always greater, and His angels are stronger. Don’t be afraid; just abide in God’s presence and claim His protection. Remember the words of Psalm 91:

    He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
    Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
    I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
    My God, in Him I will trust.”

    Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    And from the perilous pestilence.
    He shall cover you with His feathers,
    And under His wings you shall take refuge;
    His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
    You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
    Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
    Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
    Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

    A thousand may fall at your side,
    And ten thousand at your right hand;
    But it shall not come near you.
    Only with your eyes shall you look,
    And see the reward of the wicked.

    Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
    Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
    No evil shall befall you,
    Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
    For He shall give His angels charge over you,
    To keep you in all your ways.
    In their hands they shall bear you up,
    Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
    You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
    The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

    “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
    I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
    He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will deliver him and honor him.
    With long life I will satisfy him,
    And show him My salvation.”

    “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” [14] So rejoice and thank God that His angels are working on your behalf!
