Prayer: Lord, Pulverize My Heart | by Jamie Rohrbaugh | FromHisPresence.com

Do you want God to search your heart and change you? If so, pray this heartfelt prayer of humility with me today: “Lord, pulverize my heart!”

Psalm 51 contains one of the most moving prayers in the Bible.

King David wrote Psalm 51 after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sin of murdering Uriah and stealing Bathsheba (Uriah’s wife). And if you read Psalm 51 in its entirety (it’s not long), you will be hear David’s heartfelt cry of repentance–but also his relief at receiving restoration and forgiveness as he confessed his sins to the Lord.

One of the most moving parts (to me) of that Psalm is found in verses 16-17. Psalm 51:16-17 says this:

“For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart–these, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:16-17 NKJV).

Why did David say these words?

Well, first, he prayed these words because he was moved by Holy Spirit to do so. All Scripture was breathed out by God. But secondly, David prayed these words because he knew God is concerned with our heart more than He is concerned about outward rituals.

In David’s time, the Israelites were still offering sin offerings. That means their religious law required them to make animal sacrifices to God to atone for sins. However, David–the man after God’s own heart–knew that God would much rather have a heart that is faithful and sold out to Him than an animal sacrifice.

Let’s look at that passage one more time:

“For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart–these, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:16-17 NKJV).

Even though we no longer offer animal sacrifices today, I wonder sometimes if we still miss God’s main point and His main desire: a broken heart.

God doesn’t want your heart to be broken in a bad way, but He does want your heart to be continually broken before Him.

“A broken heart before God” simply means a heart that is totally submitted to God. It means that your heart does not resist God in any way.

If you have a broken and contrite heart, you are totally moldable and pliable before the Lord. You have given Him permission to search your heart and change you to the uttermost, conforming you to the image of Christ no matter what it takes. And that, my friend, is a heart attitude that God can work with.

I ask God all the time: “Lord, pulverize my heart!”

I want God to take all the resistance out of me. I want to be so yielded to Him that there is not even one thing in my body, soul, and spirit that rebels against Him. I want to be totally submitted to Him in every way–but the only way that any of us can get to that point is by the work of God’s Holy Spirit.

    Don’t you?

The good news is: We can get that way. We can get to a point of total submission to God.

We just have to have Holy Spirit’s help to get there. We have to invite Him daily to pulverize our heart; to search us, try us, and change us. We have to invite Him to relentlessly conform us to the precious image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Do you want that today?

If so, then I invite you to pray this prayer with me. Pray it and mean it with everything you are: “Lord, pulverize my heart!”

Here’s a written prayer you can pray to ask the Lord to pulverize your heart:

“Father God, I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, I love You so much. Thank You for loving me too–for loving me first, and loving me best, and loving me most. Thank You for loving me unconditionally, and for being so patient with me as You grow me and change my heart.

Father God, I want to be pleasing and acceptable to You in every way.

I want to please You, Lord. I desire with every fiber of my being to be fully surrendered to You; to walk worthy of the divine calling to which You have called me. I desire to be moldable and pliable in Your hands in every way, so that You can form me and shape me as You will.

You are the Potter, Lord, and I am the clay.

And Father, in order for You to do everything You need to do in my heart, I know You need to change me.

Father, I come before You humbly today and I invite You to do all the surgery on my heart that You need to do. I know there is a breaking process before the re-forming process, Lord; but still, I invite You to move however You need to.

Lord Jesus, Abba Father, and precious Holy Spirit …

I invite You today to pulverize my heart.

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. See if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in Your way everlasting.

O righteous Father, I truly do long for You to change me. Please look into my heart with Your eyes that see all, Lord:

    • Move every fiber of my heart, body, soul, and spirit aside, one atom at a time, and wash me clean with the blood of Jesus.
    • Purge me to the uttermost as You are saving me to the uttermost.
    • Crush me if you need to, Father; break me of anything that is not like You.
    • Let no stone go unturned, Father. Take everything out of me that is not pleasing to You.

Father, I want to live a holy life before You.

Please help me to be so humble before You that You are able to do everything You desire in me at every moment. Take me to a new level of surrender, Father–and keep me brave, safe, whole, and healthy throughout the surrendering process.

Father, I love You. That’s why I invite You to pulverize my heart today. I know Jesus said “If you love Me, keep My commandments,” so I want to obey You and honor You in absolutely everything.

I need Your help with this, though, Abba Father.

So please, make Your grace sufficient for me. Make Your strength perfect in my weakness today. Help me to love what You love and hate what You hate. Keep me from sinning against You today and every day, and I’ll give You all the praise.

Thank You, Abba Father. I love You so much. Thank You for blessing me with Your love, Your goodness, and Your salvation. Thank You for making me Your child. Thank You for keeping me and taking care of me, and thank You for Your great mercy toward me.

I love You. In Jesus’ holy, mighty, and precious name I pray, amen and amen.”

Beloved, did you pray that prayer today? If so, continue praying “Lord, pulverize my heart” all day today and every day. Make this your heart’s cry, for a broken and contrite heart God will not despise.
