Prayer for the Tongue of the Learned

Do you want God’s Holy Spirit to empower you to prophesy? Do you desire to emulate Jesus, who only said what the Father said and only did what the Father did? If so, then pray for the tongue of the learned today, that you would speak a word in season to those who are weary!

The Scriptural basis for this beautiful prayer is in Isaiah 50:

“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned. The Lord God has opened My ear; and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away” (Isaiah 50:4-5 NKJV).

This passage is talking about Jesus. It is literally spoken in the voice of Jesus, so Jesus was telling us about His life and ministry hundreds of years before He actually came to earth as a baby.

And in this passage, we read the most intriguing thing: Father God gave Jesus the tongue of the learned.

“The tongue of the learned” means the tongue that speaks what it has learned from God. The word “learned” literally means instructed or taught. It also means that being instructed or taught is habitual; that someone is accustomed to being instructed or taught.

Friend, I don’t know about you, but I want to be habitually instructed and taught by God.

Do you?

Do you want to hear God for yourself every single day?

Do you want to have Him speak His words to you for others, such that you are always able to say the right thing at the right time to other people–and so that you know (and the people know) your words are on time and from God?

I can’t think of very many privileges higher than communicating God’s message of love and hope to the world, and to the individuals we encounter every day. To speak the words of God–wow! That is what we should all desire and seek after.

It is actually possible for you to speak the words of God so accurately that God lets none of your words fall to the ground.

God did that for Jesus, of course. But He also did it for at least one other person in the Bible: the prophet Samuel.

Look at how God used Samuel and affirmed his words:

“So Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as a prophet of the Lord. Then the Lord appeared again in Shiloh. For the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord. And the word of Samuel came to all Israel” (1 Samuel 3:19-4:1a NKJV).

Did you catch that? “The Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.” Wow.

As a person in prophetic ministry myself (as we ALL should be), that inspires absolute AWE in me. To be that accurate! In order for God to let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground, Samuel would have had to have spoken God’s words and only God’s words 100% of the time, with no exceptions.

Can you imagine?

I can, and I want that. I pray for it all the time. I want to be that faithful of a servant to obey God like that–to hear Him clearly and obey; to speak only what He speaks.

Do you want that also?

If so, God will do it. He will do it for me, and He will do it for you.

To see this happen, we do have to study to show ourselves approved unto God as workers who need not be ashamed.

Studying the Word is necessary because everything we think we hear prophetically must ALWAYS be compared to the written Word of God, to verify it before it is released. As it says in Isaiah 8:20:

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20 NKJV).

There are always checks and balances in the prophetic.

If we think we hear something that doesn’t line up with God’s written Word, then we didn’t hear correctly. We must never release a word that goes against THE Word, and we have to know the Word in order to make sure we adhere to that.

But as we study and learn God’s Word, God Himself will use us more and more to speak His words. And if we pray for the tongue of the learned, He will use us to speak a word in due season to those who are weary.

Do you want this? If so, pray this prayer for the tongue of the learned today:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Holy Father, thank You for Jesus. Thank You for sending Your beloved Son to die for me on the cross. Thank You for saving me through His blood, and thank You for giving me His example to follow.

Thank You also for the work of Your Holy Spirit in my life, and for making me more like Jesus every day–even when I can’t see the changes. I praise You for Your grace, mercy, and faithfulness. Thank You. You are good, and Your mercy endures forever!

Father God, Your Word says that You gave Jesus ‘the tongue of the learned.’

You empowered Him to speak a word in season to those who were weary. You wakened His ear morning by morning to hear as Your disciple. You helped Him to only say what You said, and to only do what You did.

Abba Father, in Jesus’ name, I ask You today to do the same for me:

• Please give me the tongue of the learned.
• Let me know how to speak a word in season to those who are weary.
• Waken me morning by morning to hear You.
• Waken my ear to hear as Your disciple!
• As You open my ears to hear You and speak Your words, help me not to be rebellious nor turn away. Help me to obey You and actually SPEAK what You are saying!

Lord God, I also ask in Jesus’ name that You would do for me what You did for the prophet Samuel.

You helped Samuel hear and speak Your words so much that You let none of his words fall to the ground. You affirmed him and confirmed him, and You appeared to Your people again while using Samuel’s ministry.

Heavenly Father, I ask in Jesus’ name that You would do that same thing for me too:

• Help me to speak Your words so accurately, and so obediently, that You let none of my words fall to the ground.
• Work with me, confirming my words–which must only be Your words–with signs and wonders, as You also did for the apostles in the book of Acts.
• Use me as a vessel to release words that carry Your glory.
• Reveal Yourself to Your people again as I serve You faithfully.

Abba Father, You do all things well.

Your words are perfect words, tried seven times and still pure. It is the highest privilege of my life to be Your child, but I want to serve You too. Please use me. Entrust Your words to me, I beg, and help me to be a faithful and obedient servant in speaking Your words with the tongue of the learned.

Thank You, Father. Thank You, Lord Jesus. Thank You, precious Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.”

Friend, if you will pray and ask God for the tongue of the learned, you will find Him using you to speak His words more and more:

• He will bring you into divine appointments with others who need to hear from Him.
• He will give you words to speak that you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.
• He will flow through you prophetically, empowering you to prophesy as His Spirit moves you.

And if you are careful to study to show yourself approved (studying His Word and studying prophetic ministry, so that you know how to check each word you receive and make SURE it aligns with His written Word), He will let none of your words fall to the ground.

Yes: He will minister through you, making the words you speak–which are actually His words–run swiftly through the heart of the hearer, bringing forth good fruit–thirty, sixty, and a hundred times as much.
