Prayer to Get Out of Debt

Beloved, are you drowning in bills you can’t pay? Has some terrible life event happened that has forced you deeply into debt? Do you need the Lord’s help to pay off the debt you’re in? If so, today’s prayer to get out of debt is going to help and encourage you … and the Lord WILL hear and help you as you pray!

Before we get to the prayer, I want to encourage you in the area of getting out of debt.

One of the Scriptures that always comes to mind about this topic is this one, found in Colossians chapter 2:

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:13-15 NKJV).

When this Scripture talks about wiping out “the handwriting of requirements that was against us,” it is talking about sin.

All of us owed a sin-debt we could not pay, but Jesus paid the wages of sin for us by dying on the cross on our behalf. That is why the Word says that Jesus has “taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

But, I want you to see something about this Scripture and getting out of debt:

If God delivered you from the greatest bondage you’ve ever been in–the bondage to sin–then He can certainly deliver you from bondage to debt.

It’s going to take some work on your part, yes. It’s probably going to require you to focus and concentrate on this task of getting out of debt, and on not allowing yourself to have any number of other things until the debt is paid.

BUT, when you get to work paying off your debt–even if you can only pay one dollar, one pound, one euro, one peso at a time–then what I have always seen, every single time, is this:

God will come up beside you to help you, and miracles will happen–over time.

Beloved, God sees where you are. If you’re drowning in debt, God sees and has compassion for you. It is not His will for you to be in debt; the Bible says to keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love another. As it says in Romans 13:8:

“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8 NKJV).

But, sometimes bad things happen, and debt occurs.

What I want you to see, however, is that God sees you, and He cares, and He will help you right now.

Look at these additional Scriptures:

“Your congregation dwelt in it; You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor” (Psalm 68:10 NKJV).

“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them” (Psalm 145:18-19 NKJV).

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23 NKJV).

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13 NKJV).

“‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know’” (Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV).

God loves you, dear friend. He sees your agony; He hears your cries; and He will help you.

This doesn’t mean that He will wipe away your debt without any effort on your part.

Debt is usually–not always, but usually–a symptom of a bigger problem. And, in my experience, I usually see the Lord wanting to deal with the bigger problem as He simultaneously helps you get out of debt.

Therefore, I don’t teach people what some people call “supernatural debt cancellation.” I don’t teach people to believe God for their debts to be supernaturally erased with no effort on their part.

Why? Because I don’t generally see God do that.

“Supernatural debt cancellation” could happen, yes.

However, what I usually see is that the Lord helps people want to get out of debt badly enough to do something about it, and that process of personal change alters their lives forever–and for the better.

The process of obeying God by purposefully getting out of debt–in other words, by doing something about it–also seems to bring people into greater intimacy with Jesus, and greater submission to Him, as they make the effort to acknowledge that debt is bad and they go to the effort to clean it up.

So, could “supernatural debt cancellation” happen?

Yes; nothing is impossible with God:

“For with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37 NKJV).

But does God want people to wait and sit around on their “blessed assurance,” just hoping that God will supernaturally cancel their debts? NO.

Instead, He wants you to get on a written budget, TITHE and sow seed, work hard, start a business, cut your spending, and use WISDOM to get there. And if He comes along and supernaturally cancels some debts for you while you do that, then so much the better.

However, the Bible does prescribe budgeting, tithing, seed-sowing, hard work, starting a business, and so on … and what God is looking for in all things is greater obedience and holiness.

God is not all about our comfort.

Rather, His desire is to conform us to the image of Christ. That’s why we need to look at getting out of debt in a balanced way:

Believe God to help you supernaturally, but do all you can yourself at the same time.

This is part of what it means, from a financial perspective, to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling:

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV).

And also to take the Kingdom by force:

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12 NKJV).

But, God WILL help you when you ask Him to help you get out of debt!

For example:

• He will help you get on a written budget for every dollar you have or earn.
• He will help you tithe and sow seed.
• He will help you reduce your expenses when you ask Him to.
• He may send you side gigs or extra jobs.
• He may send gifts in the mail, happy surprises, and money that shows up out of nowhere.

And when you’re in the process of getting out of debt, your job is to say “Glory, hallelujah!” for all of that, no matter which way He chooses to send money to you–and you stay focused on the process. God will come up beside you supernaturally and accomplish more for you than you ever dreamed could happen if you will.

I hope that encourages you, beloved. The process of getting out of debt requires both faith and practical wisdom … all of it combined with diligence and hard work. But you can do it; God will help you!

With that said, it’s time to pray to get out of debt. Are you ready?

Pray this prayer to get out of debt, and then believe God to guide you and show you what to do!

Pray as follows:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, thank You for hearing me pray right now. Thank You for always being my help, and my strong support.

I am nothing without You, Lord; and I have nothing without You, either. You are everything to Me, and I thank You and praise You for it. You are so good, and Your mercy endures forever. Thank You.

Father God, I need You today.

You know that I have bills I can’t pay. I have debt that I haven’t been able to get out of yet, no matter how hard I’ve tried. I keep trying to stay afloat and do everything I can to make the situation better, but it seems like nothing has been working the way it should have.

Also, Lord, I feel helpless, ashamed, discouraged, frustrated, and humiliated because of this debt. I know it’s not Your plan for my life for me to be in debt, Lord. You desire for me to keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love others. O Lord, I desire that too–but I cannot accomplish it on my own. I need You to help me, Father. Please.

Abba Father, I am throwing myself at Your feet today and begging for Your help–and for You to help me right now.

I know I don’t have to beg, Lord; but my heart is so crushed over this that I feel like “begging” is the only word that sums up how I feel. Abba, I need You. I have no ability to conquer this debt on my own, but You have all the power in Heaven and earth–and I really need Your help.

So please, Lord, in Jesus’ name:

• Please show me the way to go. Show me what to do to get this debt paid off.
• Please help me not to go into further debt, ever again.
• Please provide for all my needs, plus extra, so that this debt can be paid.
• I plead the blood of Jesus over my bills, and over all my debts, Lord; and I ask that the great victory that Jesus purchased for me with His blood would be manifest in this situation right now.

Abba Father, I ask in Jesus’ name that You would show me what to do, and that You would bless all the works of my hands.

It seems like I have been working so hard, but that my work hasn’t been earning me the money it should have. And in order to make a better profit, You may want me to think differently or approach the situation differently. You may want me to start a side gig or a different job, or to budget or handle money differently.

Abba Father, all I want is to please You and obey Your path. I want to stick like glue to Your highest and best and most perfect will for my life. Therefore, Father, I need You to lead me and guide me–and to help me obey You as You shepherd me down this path of freedom from debt.

In Jesus’ name, therefore, I pray:

• Please show me what to do to earn or make the money I need to pay off all my debts.
• Please bless the works of my hand as I obey everything You show me to do.
• Grant me the anointing of the sons of Zebulun, Father, I pray in Jesus’ name; and let everything I touch turn to gold and bring me good income and a profit.
• Do for me exceedingly abundantly above ALL that I ask or think, please, Lord!
• Teach me to profit, I pray, in Jesus’ name!

Abba Father, I am a tither. Therefore, I claim the tithers’ rights that are listed in Malachi chapter 3:

• Please open the windows of Heaven and pour out so much blessing for me that there is not even room for me to receive all the gifts You’re sending; that Your provision would far exceed and overflow all my needs, wants, and desires.
• Please rebuke the devourer for my sake. And since this debt is a devourer, devouring my time, energy, money, interest payments, encouragement, motivation, and wellbeing, then I ask You to rebuke this debt as the devourer that it is, and make it go away and be paid off in full.
• Please do not let the devourer destroy the fruit of my ground. Let every seed I have sown bring me a huge harvest of blessing–30, 60, 100, and 1,000 times as much as I sowed.
• I pray that the “vine” of my assets and efforts would not fail to bear fruit for me in the field. Let everything that is supposed to make me money do so, without hindrance or diminishing, in Jesus’ name–and let it make me MASSIVE money, I pray, also in Jesus’ name!
• Please let all nations call me blessed, and let me be a “delightful land,” Lord.
• Give me favor everywhere I go, as well as international influence, I pray, in Jesus’ name!

Abba Father, Your Word says that Jesus “wiped out the handwriting of requirements” that was against me when He died on the cross for me. My sins were many, and the wage of my sin was death. But, Jesus died for me and forgave my sin, nailing the requirements of sin to the cross and giving me new life. Thank You for that.

But Abba Father, if You wiped out the requirements against me when those requirements were so horrible as sin and death, I know You can also wipe out the requirements against me when it comes to the debt I’m in, which is a far easier thing than the giant topic of sin.

Lord, I know I’m going to have to make some changes–and I commit to do so.

But Lord, I pray for Your supernatural help while I walk down this journey. Please, Father, in Jesus’ name, wipe out the requirements of debt that are against me. I plead the blood of Jesus over every debt I have, and I speak to every debt I have and I say:

“Debts, be paid off! Credit cards, be paid off in full! Mortgage note, car note, loans from family, student debt, tax debt, and every other kind of debt that is against me, BE PAID in full, in Jesus’ name!”

Abba Father, I know You will help me to get out of debt–and I thank You for it.

Please show me what to do at all times. Help me to be diligent in paying this debt off. Show me what money to apply to this debt, versus what money I’m supposed to use to pay other bills and live off of. Please lead me and teach me. Give me wisdom, and show me what to do.

And as You’re leading me, in Jesus’ name, please: help me to obey everything You want me to do, and help me not to be intimidated.

I need Your help to move and act, rather than feeling frozen and paralyzed, Lord.

So please, help me to follow each step You want me to take–and to take each step in a timely manner. Please don’t let me make excuses of any kind in order to get out of obeying You.

Lord, I need You and Your mercy. But, I believe Your Word that says Your compassion is great toward those who fear You. Please extend Your mighty hand of compassion toward me today. Help me pay off every debt–or You pay it off on my behalf–and deliver me from bondage to debt forevermore.

Thank You, Abba Father. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, amen and amen.”

Beloved, God sees you right now. He sees every balance due on every bill, and He will help you.

Pray and believe Him today–but exercise wisdom, work hard, budget, tithe, and start a business as you do. God will come up beside you supernaturally as you do.
