Friend, are you a worrier? Or, even if you would not define yourself that way, have you been worrying over your troubles lately? If so, this sample prayer to take no thought for tomorrow is for you.

Most of us probably worry about things on occasion, but Jesus doesn’t want us to worry at all.

Jesus expressly commanded us not to worry in Matthew 6:25-34, during His “Sermon on the Mount.” This passage says:

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:25-34 NKJV).

But even though Jesus taught us not to worry, many of us still do.

Whether we are worried about our finances, health, children, physical safety, relationships, business, job, workplace, marriage, spouse, church, or even grandchildren … opportunities to worry abound in this life. Nevertheless, we are not to take ANY of these opportunities upon ourselves. Instead, we are to continually cast our cares on the Lord:

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22 NKJV).

And we are not to be anxious, but instead are called to turn everything over to Jesus in prayer. If we will pray about everything, He will give us peace. As His Word says in Philippians 4:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV).

But oh, beloved, I know at least I am guilty of the sin of worrying at times. Aren’t you?

Maybe you’re not guilty, but I have been terribly so–and the Lord is convicting me about it. On many occasions over the years, including recently, I have found myself worrying about all kinds of different things.

From worrying about my family members’ health, to worrying about finances, to worrying about everyday issues like getting groceries or cleaning the house, to worrying about church issues, to worrying about my friends … I have accidentally and without meaning to turned “worrying” into a hobby sometimes.

But I don’t want to worry anymore.

Worry is sin, for it is disobedience to God. And for many years in the past, I didn’t realize I was doing it. But now, Holy Spirit has been convicting me about it–and I want Jesus to deliver me from worry.

Specifically, I want to transform my mind and my thinking so that I don’t worry anymore at all, but instead simply trust God with all the things. I want to obey the Lord in this area and in all areas–and NOT be conformed to the world, but to instead renew my mind!

As the Scripture says in Romans 12:

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2 NKJV).

I want my mind to be centered on trusting Jesus, and I want to walk in His peace–no matter what is going on in my life.

Are you ready? Join me and pray this prayer to take no thought for tomorrow–and to repent for the sin of worry:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, You are good, and Your mercy endures forever. Thank You that You have brand new mercies for me this morning. Thank You that You are alive and hearing me pray, and that Your eye is on the sparrow–and much more on me. Thank You for sustaining me and keeping me alive, and thank You for blessing me on this earth.

Holy Father, I praise You today. I would be remiss if I didn’t stop and just give You glory for how good You are. For even when I fail to obey You, Your mercy is still for me. Your forgiveness is for me. Thank You for that. Thank You for being so good and kind to me. I praise You for that, Lord.

Abba Father, I confess that I have been worrying a lot.

The burdens of my family, thoughts, and responsibilities feel crushing sometimes, and I have been worrying a lot. At times, I have even allowed myself to be consumed with worry.

Lord, I confess to You that my worrying is sin–and that it has been a destructive force in my life.

This worrying has caused me to walk in extreme stress, sleepless nights, joyless days, a short fuse, and to even go down sometimes into hopelessness, discouragement, depression, or even despair–depending on the day. Nothing good has come of my worrying, Lord. I admit it.

Lord, You commanded us in Your Word not to worry. Worrying does no good at all; Your Word specifically says so. And I know that’s one reason You expressly commanded us not to worry. You taught us specifically that we should take no thought for the morrow. And You said that sufficient for each day is its own trouble, and that the morrow will take care of itself.

But Father, I have sinned against You by disobeying You and worrying—not just a little bit, but frequently; some days I have worried all day long!

I have consumed my days and nights with worrying, and it’s sin to worry for even one moment. I confess my many sins of worrying, Lord, and I lay these sins at Your feet.

Please forgive me for my sin of worrying, Lord. I am so sorry. Please forgive me for sinning against You in every way that I have sinned. Please, wash me clean with the blood of Jesus and fill me with Your Holy Spirit where all those sins were, in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, I desire to obey Your command not to worry, and to take no thought for tomorrow.

But, I need Your help, Lord. So, Father, in Jesus’ name I humbly ask:

    • Please help me learn to trust You even with stressful things.
    • Help me to rest in You, knowing that Your grace is sufficient for me—and that my times are in Your hands!
    • You know that it’s easier for me to trust You to help with other people’s problems sometimes, but it’s harder for me sometimes to trust You with my own problems. Please help me to trust You with myself, just like I ought to with others!
    • No matter what day it is, or what circumstances I’m facing, please help me to set my eyes and keep them set on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
    • Please help me to believe Your Word over every situation, and never to give in to what I hear people say that does not line up with Your Word.
    • Please work patience in my heart, Lord. So much of my worrying happens because You do things on Your own timetable, instead of on mine. Please forgive me for that, Lord, and help me to trust Your timing.
    • Help me to hide Your Word in my heart and meditate on that Word, believing only what YOU say and not what my eyes try to tell me.
    • Help me to rest in Your timing, also, Lord—knowing that You will supply all my needs, but that Your definition of a deadline is different than my own deadlines and due dates at times.

Abba Father, Your Word says that worrying does no good at all. My worrying does not help anything at all, and it only hurts me. Therefore, Father, I choose the way of peace today. I choose Your rest today, and I choose to trust You.

Lord, please help me to walk in Your way of peace and trust.

Help me not to be conformed to this world, Lord; but to be transformed by the renewing of my mind, so that I can prove what is Your good and acceptable and perfect will for my life. Please minister to me and encourage me all along the way, each and every day, as I seek to walk with You even through difficult situations.

Lord, those difficult times are the times when I have trapped myself in worry the most, and I don’t choose to do that anymore. Therefore, Father, please help me just to rest in You, and to come unto You when I am weary and heavy laden, so You can give me rest.

Help me to be anxious for nothing; but in everything, with prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, to make my requests known unto You. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Thank You, Abba Father. Thank You for hearing me pray, and thank You for helping me not to worry anymore.

Thank You for the peace that is flooding my heart even this moment. I give You all the praise and glory for it, and I thank You for Your mercy and kindness toward me.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.”

    /rest

Beloved, if we are going to get delivered from worry, we will have to make a conscious effort every day to TRUST God and take no thought for tomorrow.

But, God’s grace is sufficient for us. His strength is made perfect in weakness, as He told us in 2 Corinthians chapter 12:

“And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NKJV).

And beloved, if we will just take notice of our thoughts each day, the Lord will convict us each time our thoughts stray. And as we continue to pray for His help not to worry, He will help us take no thought for tomorrow.
