Prayer to Keep Your Eyes On Jesus | by Jamie Rohrbaugh | FromHisPresence.com

Beloved, is the chaos of this world swirling around you and sending you nearly into a panic attack? Do you feel overwhelmed, hopeless, joyless, and discouraged?

If so, the Lord will help you today. And the first phase of His help comes in the form of helping us keep our eyes on Jesus, so we can find peace, stillness, and stability while the world and the waves rock everything around us.

Remember the words of our Lord Jesus when He said:

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NKJV).

But even during the worst troubles, we have God’s promise to help us:

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV).

And many times, the first phase of His help–that grace that gives us strength, comfort, and encouragement–is when He helps us take our eyes OFF the chaos and stress of this world and place our eyes ONTO Jesus, our beautiful Savior.

Remember what the Word tells us in Hebrews 12:1-2 about the importance of keeping our eyes on Jesus:

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV).

    And then there’s Colossians 3:1-2:

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:1-2 NKJV).

There’s so much peace when we keep our eyes on Jesus–and nothing but chaos when we take our eyes off Him.

Remember Peter, who walked on water at the command of the Lord … as long as he kept looking at Jesus. However, as soon as he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink.

Faith alone could not hold Peter up; he also had to keep his eyes off the waves, for the waves were faith-stealers.

And in our lives today, the waves all around us are still faith-stealers.

If you look at the waves of the storms around you, your faith is going to drain out your toes. When that happens, you are likely to sink!

However, if you just keep your eyes on Jesus, nothing can interfere with your faith. You will continue progressing toward Him every day, and He will be the Peace and Calm in your storm.

But sometimes keeping our eyes on Jesus is harder than it sounds. That’s why we need God’s help.

Pain and grief and loss and such things are real; they happen in real life to real people. It’s unrealistic to say that we will never experience such things in life.

However, when the waves of this world’s storms threaten to overwhelm us, our loving Heavenly Father is there to help us keep our eyes on Jesus.

Get the book and focus on communion with God’s Holy Spirit for 12 days! Remember that He is your Helper, Comforter, and Advocate. You can’t truly know God without knowing His Holy Spirit!

All three Members of the Godhead–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit–are with you to help you keep your eyes on Jesus.

Remember that Jesus told us we can’t do anything without Him. Since Jesus only said what the Father said and did what Father did, we know that Father God was also saying the same thing at the same time. And the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, and is called your Helper.

Why do They want you to keep your eyes on Jesus? Because He is the Door. He is the Way; no man can come to the Father except through Him. (See John 14:6.) And if we keep our eyes on Jesus, we will abide in Him–and, since Jesus is in the Father, we will be hidden in the Father as well.

So do you need help today to keep your eyes on Jesus?

God will help you. All you have to do is pour your heart out to Him in prayer, asking for His help. And if you don’t have any words to say that you feel are fitting for your circumstances, I wrote a sample prayer below for you to pray.

Therefore, if you need help keeping your eyes on Jesus …

Pray this prayer to keep your eyes on Jesus:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I’m really struggling emotionally, and I need Your help.

Father, first I want to thank You that You have always helped me before. You’ve always brought me to peace when I’ve been panicking. You help me every time I call on You, for You are faithful, and I thank You and praise You for that today.

Father God, everything is chaotic and swirling around me, and I can’t make it through the day without Your help.

You have blessed me with calling and responsibility. You have blessed me with family and friends. You have prospered me in many ways. However, if I have learned anything along the way, it’s this:

The more You bless me, the more I need You. The more You prosper and use me, the greater my inadequacy.

But Father, I thank You that You are a faithful God. You are my Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Even when I don’t feel You working or see You moving the way I wish I did, I know that You are still here. You are sovereignly holding me in Your arms. Thank You.

Abba, I need Your help to keep my eyes on Jesus right now.

There’s so much pain, agony, grief, hurt, and loss around me. In many ways, I feel like my life has been marked by pain and loss. And I’m tired of it, Lord. I just want things to be okay again; to be happy and for my life to be filled with joy.

Lord, I know You will walk with me through all these storms, but I need You to help me keep my eyes on Jesus.

The pain of this world threatens to overwhelm me. The pain and suffering in my heart seem to go on unceasingly. We get through one storm together, and a worse one often seems to blow in in its place.

It’s too much for me, Father. I understand at least partially why Jesus said that “without Me you can do nothing,” for this life is too weighty and painful for me to bear up to without You.

Therefore, Abba Father, in Jesus’ name, I implore You to help me keep my eyes on Jesus today.

Please help me to fix my eyes and heart right on Jesus, and on His face. Help me to gaze at Jesus without taking my eyes off Him, no matter how many stormy waves assail me. And as I do, please give me peace, stability, and strength in the midst of the storm.

Abba Father, only You can perfect those things which concern me.

Your Word says that You will perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle me after I have suffered a while. That’s what You said in 1 Peter 5:10:

“But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you” (1 Peter 5:10 NKJV).

And Father, I’d like to point out that I have suffered a little while. I’ve suffered a long while. And therefore, on the authority of Your Word, I ask that today You would perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle me. I ask You to bring me into a safe haven–my desired harbor–and glorify Your own name while doing it.

Abba, Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (NKJV). I choose to follow Jesus. I choose to submit myself to You, day in and day out. I desire to keep my nose in the back of Jesus my Savior, following Him wherever He leads–wherever You lead, Father.

But I’m asking You to also fulfill Your promise: that, as I follow Jesus, I will not walk in darkness.

I’m asking You to fill me with the light of life. Fill me with joy again. Fill me with joy and peace in believing. Fill me with the fullness of joy that comes only from being in Your presence, I ask, in Jesus’ name.

Thank You, Abba Father. I need You now. I need Jesus and Your precious Holy Spirit. Please help me to set my mind on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God–and I plead earnestly that the cares of this world will fall away as I keep my eyes on Jesus.

Thank You, Father. Thank You that You are not a man that You should lie. You are Promise Keeper; You are my covenant God. And as I am boldly coming before Your throne of grace right now, so let me obtain mercy–and grace to help in time of need.

Thank You. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. And it’s in Jesus’ lovely name I pray, amen.”
