Promise 3: He Who Fears the Commandment Will Be Rewarded

“He who despises the word will be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment will be rewarded” (Proverbs 13:13 NKJV).

Do you love God’s Word? If so, then you qualify for one of God’s great rewards: the reward He gives to those who fear His commandment. And friend, if you are desperate for the Lord to bless you, then it’s time to pray for the specific rewards God promises you–and to keep on praying in faith until you see His rewards flowing into your life!

Friend, God is a REWARDER of those who seek Him.

We all need to be reminded of this truth. Hebrews 11:6 says:

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6 NKJV).

It is actually impossible to please God without faith. And when we come to Him, one of the things we have to believe Him for is REWARD. This mandate is spelled out clearly by Holy Spirit Himself, Who breathed out every word of Scripture for the scribes to write down–including this passage about reward.

We simply MUST believe that He is a rewarder.

But what kinds of activities does He reward?

Well, this is not a comprehensive list, but He lists specific rewards in the Sermon On the Mount that are great starting places:

• You have a great reward in Heaven for being reviled, persecuted, and lied about on the earth. (See Matthew 5:11-12.)
• You will have open reward for doing charitable deeds in secret. (See Matthew 6:1-4.)
• You will have open reward for going into a private room all by yourself, closing the door, and praying to your Father in secret. (See Matthew 6:6.)
• You will have open reward for fasting in secret. (See Matthew 6:17-18.) (This is a separate thing from a corporate fast, where everyone is fasting together and knows it. Corporate fasting is also commanded in the Bible; see Joel 2.)

But those aren’t the only rewards. Again, Proverbs 13:13 says this:

“He who despises the word will be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment will be rewarded” (Proverbs 13:13 NKJV).

And friend, this is an easy reward to qualify for.

The qualification is simple. Proverbs 13:13 tells us that “he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.” The “commandment” is God’s Word. “Fearing” it, according to Strong’s Concordance, means being reverent toward it and having a [holy] fear toward it.

And “holy fear” means you stand in awe of it enough that you obey it. If you do, he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.

So, I ask you today:

Do you love God’s Word and do your utmost to obey it? Do you have a holy fear and awe of God’s Word?

If so, then you qualify for God’s reward–just for loving God’s Word with a holy fear.

What do God’s rewards look like?

God’s rewards could be anything good:

• New closeness with Him
• Fresh encounters with Him
• Fresh infilling of His Holy Spirit
• Wisdom
• Anointing
• Opportunity
• Money
• A great day, filled with joy and fun
• New relationships
• Blessing on your family, your marriage, your children, your business, and so on …
• Or any other good thing!

And of course, all the things above are also freely available for the asking when you ask our Father for them specifically, even if you had never heard about this promise in Proverbs 13:13. It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom. This is what Jesus taught us in Luke 12:32:

“Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32 NKJV).

But, on a daily basis, God alone knows exactly what kind of rewards He desires to send you TODAY. He will pick how He chooses to reward you, and His reward will be good. You will definitely love it!

So, why not pray for this reward today?

And as you pray, why not also ask Him to show you, as He rewards you, what specific reward is tied to this very promise? In other words, ask Him to show you which of the MANY blessings He sends you every day are actually linked to this promise, and are therefore your reward for fearing His Word.

Pray for the reward of fearing the commandment today:

• Point out to the Father that you do fear His commandment.
• Thank Him for His generous promise to reward you for fearing His Word, because He didn’t have to promise us that at all.
• Ask Him to reward you for fearing and loving His Word.
• And then ask Him to show you the links between this promise and the physical, manifest blessings He sends you this very day.

Does this promise of God (that he who fears the commandment will be rewarded) resonate in your heart today? Is Holy Spirit bearing witness in your heart right now that YES, you do love His Word, and that this promise is therefore for you?
