Prayer: Lord, I Need An Attitude Adjustment

Have you been struggling with your emotions lately? Are you trying to get your emotions in check, knowing that whatever bad things you’re feeling aren’t from the Lord?

If so, pray this prayer with me today: “Lord, I need an attitude adjustment!”

I’ve been going through some hard things lately, and my attitude has been pretty good most of the time. However, a few times–this morning being one of them–fear has crept in.

I know fear is not from the Lord, so I wasn’t giving the fear place in my belief system or anything like that.

However, I was feeling the fear, and it was affecting my thoughts. And although I was fighting off the fear, plus fighting off the doubt and unbelief that come with fear, I don’t even want to feel that way. I want to stay strong in faith at all times, you know?

To be perfectly transparent, I thought I had conquered fear a long time ago, but when the Lord grows you over time, He digs deeper and exposes new layers. So sometimes I still need to take my soul to the Lord and ask to be re-filled with His perfect love, which casts out fear.

We’re all like onions in that way.

We have layers and layers in our soul. (The soul is comprised of your mind, will, and emotions.) And throughout life, as we grow in the Lord, He sometimes exposes things we thought we had victory over–showing us that there’s a little bit of that thing remaining.

Although God shows us little pockets of these things in our soul, He’s not being mean by doing so. He only does so because He wants to heal us. By exposing the issues in our soul, He is inviting us to partner with Him to receive healing and deliverance from the things that bind us.

So this morning, I was struggling with fear.

I knew it wasn’t right. At first, I tried to ignore it and just rebuke the fear, but then I realized this was deeper than just a need to rebuke something. So I began to pray for two things:

1. A fresh infilling of God’s perfect love, which casts out fear; and
2. An attitude adjustment. 🙂

I prayed in the Spirit and prayed in English too. I also put on one of my favorite songs about thankfulness–Richard Smallwood’s song Thank You–and began to thank God effusively for everything I could think of.

It made a big difference.

Giving thanks always helps you get your attitude and thoughts in line, no matter where you are or what you’re struggling with. And as I confessed my weaknesses and failures to the Lord, asking Him to fill me with His love and asking Him to re-order my thoughts, I could feel Him changing my heart.

Beloved, let’s face it: We all need a heart-changing touch from the Lord sometimes.

I need His touch every day, and I believe you do too. But some days we get all down in our soul, looking at “things” and “people” and “situations” and “circumstances,” and we take our eyes off Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. 

When that happens, we typically go downhill fast.

But you know what? There’s a solution to all of it:

It always helps to confess our weaknesses and failures to the Lord and ask HIM for a Holy Ghost attitude adjustment.

Let’s pray this together:

“Dear Heavenly Father,

I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Father God, I love You and You know that I do. I want to be pleasing in Your sight. I want to honor You, and I want my thoughts and my heart attitude to be pleasing and acceptable to You.

But Father, I need help today. I need Your help because I’m feeling afraid, stressed out, upset, angry, resentful, (insert any emotion here). I need an attitude adjustment and I know I do!

Father God, would You help me right now?

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. And see what the wicked things are in me, and please Father, GET THEM OUT! Please change my heart, my emotions, and my attitude right now, Abba Father, in Jesus’ name.

Father, Your Word says that You will take away my stony heart and give me a heart of flesh. You will take away my old spirit and give me a new spirit.

So Father God, in Jesus’ name, I ask right now that You would give me Your heart and Your Spirit.

I speak to my soul also, Lord, and I say: Soul, come to attention right now in Jesus’ name. Soul, line up with my spirit, which is filled with God’s Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name!

Father God, I ask that You would:

• Fill me with Your perfect love, which casts out fear.
• Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
• If I am in any way harboring sin, bitterness, or unforgiveness of any kind, convict me.
• Give me a truly repentant heart and help me to repent from my heart.
• Help me make things right with You and with others.
• Help me to forgive like Jesus forgave the thief on the cross. Anoint me to forgive, Father, just as You forgive me!
• Help me honor You in all things, Father God.

Father, I thank You that all the commandments You command me today are NOT TOO HARD.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. That means I can obey You, and I can maintain a right attitude and right heart before You!

So thank You, Father. Thank You for working in me right now both to will and to do for Your good pleasure. Thank You for bringing my soul into alignment with Your Spirit and Your Word even now. 

Abba Father, I love You. Please forgive me of my sins of doubt, unbelief, and any other sins I have embraced.

I’m sorry for sinning against You, Father God. Please wash me in the blood of Jesus. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Make me like You, Father, and I’ll give You all the praise.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen and amen.”

Beloved friend, do you need help with your emotions today?

If so, I hope you prayed this prayer–“Lord, give me an attitude adjustment!” He knows our frame and is mindful that we are but dust. When we confess our weakness and neediness to Him, He rushes in to help us–even to the point of helping us rearrange our thoughts in order to get right with Him in every way.
