Radical Prayer #20: Prayer for the Secret of the Lord

“The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Psalm 25:14).

Beloved friend, are you hungry for God? Are you absolutely desperate for Him, famished for Him, your soul wasted for Him? Or, do you want to become that way?

If so, then today’s prayer for the secret of the Lord is for you!

The term “secret of the Lord” is from Psalm 25:14, which says, “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Psalm 25:14). When I read that verse recently, Holy Spirit arrested my spirit. I stopped in shock, knowing that here was something I definitely wanted.

The problem was, I didn’t know what it meant. 🙂 Was “the secret of the Lord” some kind of literal secret that He tells us when we are with Him? Was it inside communication with Heaven in some way?

So, I looked it up. 🙂

According to Strong’s Concordance, the word “secret” in this verse about “the secret of the Lord” means:

“A session, i.e. company of persons (in close deliberation); by implication, intimacy, consultation, a secret:–assembly … inward, secret (counsel).”

In other words, the secret of the Lord means close, intimate, secret consultation with Him.

Walking in “the secret of the Lord” means:

• walking with Him in the garden in the cool of the day.
• It’s the opportunity for you to meet together with Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit–just the four of you alone in close deliberation.
• It’s the secret, close, nobody-else-invited intimacy that comes when you’re jealous of spending time with your favorite person …
• And the Lord Himself is your favorite person–and you are HIS favorite person.

That’s “the secret of the Lord.”

Do you want this kind of intimacy and communion with Him? Do you want to walk with Him and talk with Him, meeting with Him face-to-face as the Lord talked with Moses?

You can have it. YOU can have the secret of the Lord.

How?

By fearing God.

When the Bible talks about fearing God, it’s not talking about an evil, demonic spirit of fear (obviously). THAT evil spirit of fear is something each and every one of us has to be delivered from, and we shold never tolerate it in our lives again.

But there is such a thing as a holy fear.

You can read my story about holy fear here; it’s about that one time I literally thought I might die in the Presence of the Lord. THAT is the kind of holy fear God is talking about when He refers to “the secret of the Lord”:

• the holy fear that comes when you recognize the awesome and terrible magnificence, power, and holiness of God …
• … and you recognize that He is here with you, right now, in all that awesomeness, power, and terrible magnificence.

Having a holy fear of God means that you obey Him. You respect and revere Him. You hold Him in the esteem that He deserves, and you know better than to cross Him–both because you love Him AND because you recognize that defying God is never a good idea. 🙂

In order to obtain the secret of the Lord, you have to be filled with a holy fear of God.

How do we become filled with the fear of the Lord? Well, a great place to start is by asking Father God to fill you with the Spirit of the fear of the Lord–one of the sevenfold manifestations of Holy Spirit. 

We read about the Spirit of the fear of the Lord in Isaiah 11:1-5, which says:

“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

His delight is in the fear of the Lord, and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.

Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, and faithfulness the belt of His waist” (Isaiah 11:1-5, emphasis mine).

The Spirit of the fear of the Lord is actually Holy Spirit; He is God.

And when He’s called “the Spirit of the fear of the Lord” in the Bible, this simply means He is manifesting Himself in that moment with the express purpose of filling us with a holy fear of the Lord.

And since we know God is never holding back on us …

Since we know that God will give us more of Holy Spirit whenever we ask Him to do so (Luke 11:13) …

And since we know that, in fact, NO good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11) …

Then you can ask the Lord for the whole kit and caboodle. 

The whole package (God and everything He has) can be yours. God Himself, His Holy Spirit, and every manifestation of His Holy Spirit can fill your life. He promised!

So how do you begin walking in the secret of the Lord–in that intimate communion He reserves for His closest friends? 

Let’s look at the answer one more time:

“The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Psalm 25:14).

Answer: You have to fear Him. When you fear Him in a holy way, you will walk in the secret of the Lord, and the Lord Himself will show you His covenant!

Are you ready to ask the Lord to fill you with His Spirit of the fear of the Lord, and to give you the secret of the Lord?

If so, pray this with me:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, I love You so much. You are truly everything to me. You and Your Son Jesus saved me, with the help of Your precious Holy Spirit. You saved my life, both literally and spiritually, so many times; I owe You everything.

Abba Father, You are so good, and Your mercy endures forever. You are sweeter than sweetness itself; Your words are sweeter than honey. You sustain my life, and I couldn’t live one minute without You. Thank You for being my Father, Lord.

Abba Father, in Jesus’ name, I ask You to bring me into the journey of walking in “the secret of the Lord.”

Teach me to dwell with You:

• in Your Word;
• in Your manifest glory;
• in prayer;
• and in conversation.

Teach me to seek out Your hidden counsel. Help me to abide in You and in Your love, and to closet myself away with You in the secret place You taught us about in Psalm 91:1.

Holy Father, even while I go through the routine of my daily life, please keep me closeted away with You:

• If I am exercising or going to work, I still ask that, in my spirit and soul, I would be communing with You in the hidden place.
• If I am shopping at the grocery store, I still ask that in my spirit and soul I would actually be seeking hard after You.
• If I am cleaning the house or caring for my children, even then I ask that I would be caught up in Your Presence; enraptured in Your glory; and listening to Your secrets.

Abba Father, tune my eyes, ears, soul, and spirit to hear and see Your counsel.

Help me to deliberate with You closely at all times. Help me to keep Your company and honor Your Presence. Help me to consult You on everything, and to carry out Your wishes in every circumstance. 

“Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths” (Psalm 25:4). And in the words of Moses, I cry out:

“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight” (Exodus 33:13a).

Father, I know You–but I want to know You more.

You are enough, but the limited knowledge I have of You is not enough. You are everything to me. Jesus, You propel me forward and hold me together by the very word of Your power. You, O Lord, feed my soul; I don’t live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from Your mouth, O Lord (Deuteronomy 8).

O dearest Father, You are infinite–so I can never be satisfied with the little bit of You that I know. I want to know You more, and that will be my anthem the rest of my days.

Father, let me walk in intimacy and secret with You.

Help me to assemble with You–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit–every day, every moment, every heartbeat of my life. ‘Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me save that Thou art.’* Truly, let me spend the rest of my life dwelling with You in intimate counsel, and worshipping You in the beauty of holiness.

Father, fill me with the Spirit of the fear of the Lord, Who makes all these things possible.

Help me to obey You in all things. Help me to love and cherish You, Jesus, and Your sweet Holy Spirit the way You deserve to be loved, cherished, and obeyed. Help me to walk with you and talk with you in the garden of my life, no matter what time of day it is.

Thank You, Abba Father. I’ll give You all the praise. Thank You for making it possible for You to answer my prayer by the blood of Jesus, and thank You that Your answer is YES and AMEN.

In Jesus’ name, amen.”
