Beloved, are you in desperate need of both money and rest? If so, I want to encourage you today.
I opened my Bible to Psalm 23 today; and, as I often do, I got out my handy gel highlighters to color-code what I was reading.
My Bible is my workbook for life, not a museum piece; so I mark it up, write notes and prayers, and highlight everywhere I read. Well, I had never highlighted Psalm 23 before, although I had written notes, so I began to do so.
When I highlight, I use the following colors (yes, this is important for today’s word): 🙂
- Pink is for things that speak to my heart–words that minister to my soul;
- Green is for all Scriptures about money, financial provision, spending, saving, giving, investing, entrepreneurship, etc.;
- Blue is for Scriptures about rest.
I do use other colors for other things also, but those are the main ones that matter today. 🙂
Anyway, as I began to read Psalm 23, it struck me that the very first verse is about financial provision.
Yes, the Lord talks about blessing and intimacy with Him and His protection and nearness and all those things later in this Psalm. But …
Before you get to those things; before you get to the pink parts …
He talked about money first (the green part).
And then He talked about rest (the blue part).
You know what that means? It means God wants you to know that He sees your felt needs and is addressing them first today.
Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Yes indeed; the very first thing that Holy Spirit had to say as He dictated this Psalm to David was that He will take care of us and we will not lack for anything financially!
This really struck me. Can you imagine the scene? David sits down with his harp under a tree to worship God, and immediately–first thing!–before talking about anything else, God wants David to know that He sees his financial needs and will provide for them.
Beloved, the Lord wants you to know the same thing today:
When you come to Him with needs, He wants you to know immediately–before you even have a chance to talk with Him about anything else, or listen to Him about anything else–He wants you to know that He sees your need …
… And He will provide it.
God sees your financial need. He sees your need for money, and He will provide it.
Yes, He wants to bless you and walk with you and lead you and guide you. He’s about to speak to you about those things too.
But you know what? He SEES that your financial needs are painful and stressful and right at the top of your heart, and God wants you to know today that He is going to provide for everything.
And you know what else God sees? He sees your need for rest.
Right after Holy Spirit dictated Psalm 23:1 to David–“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want”–He went on to speak next about REST and your need for rest.
What did He say? Simply this:
“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul …” (Psalm 23:2-3b).
Why does this matter?
Because the Bible tells us that Holy Spirit Himself is dictating this Psalm to David; He is literally breathing out this Psalm to David at the very moment David is conceiving it. So, these are not David’s words alone; they are God’s words breathed out through David.
As it says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV).
Yes; Holy Spirit was dictating these words to and through David, and He was doing so because these are His words to and for you and me as well. These words are for everybody.
These words are for you.
And today, right after reassuring you that He sees your financial needs and He will provide …
The Lord wants you to know that He sees your stress and your need for rest.
He sees your financial needs, and He wants you to know that He is your Shepherd and He will provide them. That’s what He’s saying to you first in this Psalm.
But secondly, He wants you to know that He will give you rest.
The Lord sees you today. You are not hidden from Him. He sees you and knows you, and all parts of your life are naked and exposed to Him who knows you best and loves you most.
He sees you.
Beloved, let this encourage you today: God sees you.
And He is ready to give you rest.
“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:2-3b).
O dear friend, dear child of God, do you hear the cry of the Lord over you today?
He wants to make you lie down in green pastures. Will you cooperate with Him? Because sometimes, it’s only after you tell Him that you are willing to rest that He leads you into the best and greenest resting places.
If you’re determined to work and strive and slave away, He’ll let you; He respects your free will. But His heart for you and His will for you are to REST.
God wants to give you rest today.
He sees you. He knows you. He sees how much money has been stressing you out. He sees your need for rest.
And today, if you will, the invitation of the Lord is this:
“Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
‘So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,'”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: ‘And God rested on the seventh day from all His works’; and again in this place: ‘They shall not enter My rest.’
Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, ‘Today,’ after such a long time, as it has been said:
‘Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts'” (Hebrews 4:1-7 NKJV).
Oh beloved, God sees your need for rest today. He wants to give you the rest you so desperately require. He wants to give you the rest your soul craves.
Yes, He wants to do even more for you than that:
- He wants to lead you in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake (Psalm 23:3).
- He wants you to know that He is with you even in the valley of the shadow of death, and that you don’t need to fear (Psalm 23:4).
- He will comfort you with His rod and His staff, which guide you and keep you on the straight and narrow path–and which keep all the predators away (Psalm 23:4).
- He wants to bless you and vindicate you in front of your enemies! (Psalm 23:5).
- He wants to fill you with His new and fresh anointing of His Holy Spirit (Psalm 23:5).
- He wants to bless you with extra and abundance and more than enough of every good thing! (Psalm 23:5).
- He wants you to know that His goodness and mercy are following close behind you and manifesting on every side, and will continue to do so all the days of your life! (Psalm 23:6)
- He wants you to know that you will dwell in His house forever (Psalm 23:6).
But you know what, beloved? Before He even gets to any of those things, the first thing He wants you to know today are that He sees your need for money and rest, and He is the answer.
He is your Solution.
God sees your need for money and rest.
Your needs are not unseen nor ignored. Your loving Abba Father sees you. He knows you. He understands …
… And even before He wants to talk to you about your spiritual relationship today, He simply wants you to know that He sees your felt needs …
… And that HE is the answer.
He is your Shepherd; He will provide everything you need, and you will not lack.
You will not be in want. Hold on, beloved child of God; He is providing right now. He is taking care of you right now:
- Even now, He is working things out for your good.
- Even now, the money you need is showing up.
- Even now, the rest you need is on its way.
- Even now, HE IS YOUR REST.
As Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
But O beloved, you have to choose to rest and receive.
Will you make that choice today? Will you choose to rest and receive from the Lord your Shepherd today? Will you let Him provide all your financial needs while you rest?
And will you let Him minister deeply to your heart the fact that He sees you–and that these things that are important to you are front and center on His heart too?
God sees you. He sees your need for money and rest, and He wants you to know that He will take care of you today.
God will perfect all that concerns you. He is supplying both your felt needs–for money and for rest–right now.
He sees you. He knows you. And what matters to you matters to Him.
Father wants you to know that today.
Pray this with me:
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for seeing Me and knowing Me. Thank You for seeing that I have been so stressed out about money that I have been having a hard time resting.
But I choose to rest today, Abba Father. I choose to rest in Your arms. Thank You for providing everything I need in abundance.
In Jesus’ name I pray, amen and amen.”
