Do you love to study God’s Word? Do you like to encourage people in the Lord? Do you tell people about Jesus that don’t know Him? Or, do you have the amazing privilege of teaching God’s Word in formal settings, such as a Bible study group or church? If so, then this prayer to rightly divide the Word of truth is for you!
This prayer is really for everybody, because every Christian needs a good understanding of God’s Word.
Every Christian should love God’s Word (see seven reasons to love the Word here), and every Christian should study the Word. God’s Word is meat for our spirit, and His Word actually brings us life.
As Jesus told us in John 6:63:

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63 NKJV).
God’s Word will satisfy your soul when nothing else will. As long as Holy Spirit is ministering it to you as you read, it will fill you up.
Also, He will give you wisdom as you read.
God the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom, counsel, and might, and He will open up His Word to you if you’ll ask Him to. When He does so, He will show you things you never could have imagined in its pages. At the same time, He will teach you how to live your life with success, victory, and power–all out of the pages of God’s Word.
But, we have to understand the Word correctly in order for that to happen.
And in order to understand God’s Word–and to be able to present it accurately to other people in whatever form …
- Whether you are encouraging someone in the Lord over the dinner table;
- Whether you are witnessing to a stranger who has never heard the name of Christ;
- Whether you are teaching the Word in your Sunday School or Life Group;
- Whether you are preaching the Word from a church pulpit, online pulpit, or any other kind of formal platform where people sit and listen …
… we need Holy Spirit’s help to both understand His Word AND teach it to others accurately.

And we are to LABOR for right understanding and accurate communication of the Word.
That is why the apostle Paul wrote the following to his young protégé, Timothy:
“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV).
Understanding and presenting God’s Word accurately should be one of the greatest quests of our lives. After all, if we do not speak according to God’s Word, there is no light in us:
“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20 NKJV).
And after we labor to study the Word and understand it for ourselves, we must approach the communication of that Word with holy fear and trembling.

Look at what the Lord said in Isaiah 66:
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,’ says the Lord. ‘But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word’” (Isaiah 66:1-2 NKJV).
God expects us to tremble at His Word.
And that includes both when we hear Him speak it AND when we speak it ourselves. No matter in what format or environment we are hearing God’s Word, we have to approach it with a holy fear and respect that makes us tremble.
Why? Because we have to rightly divide the Word of truth:
- Not teaching any heresy;
- Not taking anything out of context;
- Teaching exactly what the Word says, across all its pages taken together (in other words, you can’t take one phrase or verse and make a theology out of it when other parts of God’s Word provide details and supporting statements that would change your statement); and
- Teaching it accurately; and
- Presenting it with the heart of God.
And beloved, we need God’s help to rightly divide the Word of truth like that.
Teaching God’s Word is an awesome responsibility. It is a weighty and heavy task. Even if you are “teaching” God’s Word over the dinner table by simply encouraging a friend in the principles of God, we still have the fearsome task to represent God’s Word accurately. We must all rightly divide the Word of truth.

17 Results of Wisdom In Your Life: Why Wisdom Is the Principal Thing
Do you believe that you need God’s help to rightly divide the Word of truth?
Whether for your own personal study or for conveying the Word to others, do you believe that you need the Holy Spirit to open His Word up to you, and to help you understand and communicate that Word accurately?
If so, would you join me in praying this simple prayer to rightly divide the Word of truth today?
Let’s pray as follows:
“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name.
Abba Father, thank You for Your Word. Thank You for speaking to me through Your Word. Thank You for even allowing me to have a Bible, as so many people on earth do not! Thank You for the great gift which is Your Word, both in written format and in the Person of Jesus Christ.
Holy Father in Heaven, I bow before You and Your Word.
You are great and holy, and there is none like You. Every word You have spoken is pure, refined seven times (Psalm 12:6); and You have magnified Your Word above Your name (Psalm 138:2). I love Your Word, Lord. Thank You for allowing me to even read Your Word and know You through it. You are a great and generous God, and I praise You for that, Father.
Abba Father, You have called me to the ministry of Your Word.
I don’t deserve the honor of this call, and I didn’t do anything to earn Your call. You simply called me as an example of the foolish things that confound the wise (1 Corinthians 1:26-29). And for all these years, You have helped me prepare to fulfill Your call.
With Your help, Lord, I have studied as hard as I know how to study. I have been diligent and faithful to You—all by Your grace, of course—but I have done everything I could to learn Your Word and understand it rightly by Your Spirit. Thank You for helping me do that; it has been an awesome privilege and responsibility.
However, Father, I still need Your help desperately in order to rightly divide the Word of truth.
I can’t preach without You, Lord. I can’t even teach or witness or encourage others in Your Word without Your help. I need Your help to present the meat of Your Word to people accurately and in a way they can understand.
Without You I can do nothing, Lord. But Your Word says that I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me. Therefore, Heavenly Father, I ask today in Jesus’ name:
- Please help me to rightly divide the Word of truth to Your people.
- Give me wisdom, understanding, prudence, discretion, discernment, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord.
- Give me the tongue of the learned, that I may speak a word in due season to those who are weary. Let me speak as the very oracles of God.
- Let Holy Spirit preach the Word, teach, witness, and encourage through me and for me right now.
- Let Your Word run swiftly out of my mouth and into the hearts of the hearers, bringing forth good fruit—thirty, sixty, and a hundred times as much fruit!
- Sear Your Word into every heart like a brand, Father. Forever change the landscape of our hearts as we hear Your Word today, and as You help me to minister Your Word–even over the dinner table! Let there be smoke as You sear Your Word into our hearts.
- Let Your Word cut me and all the hearers, for Your Word is alive and powerful and sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing line of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow.
Abba Father, please set a watch on my mouth.
Help me to speak Your words only as I go to teach Your Word. Please do not let me say even one thing that is not from You. Help me to rightly divide the Word of truth, and not to add anything to it nor take anything away from it.
Lord, please also help me to see things in Your Word that I have never even seen before as I preach. Let revelation well up out of me by Your Spirit, and help me to connect the dots to understand things in Your Word that I have never understood before.
Abba, Your Word is holy.
You said to let not many become teachers, for we shall receive a stricter judgment. Your Word is pure and powerful, and deserves to be trembled at. Every word that You speak is true. You are not a man, that You should lie. You sent Your Word and healed our disease, and every word that You speak has power.
Therefore, Father, please feed me with Your Word every day. Help me to understand it accurately. And as I go to share Your Word with others, please: do the sharing through me and for me:
- Teach and preach and witness through me and for me right now.
- Use my mouth, and use me as a vessel, to convince, exhort, convict, and encourage Your people.
- Build Your people up through this Word that I’m teaching right now, Lord, and keep me in Your straight and narrow way both now and always.
Thank You, Abba Father. Thank You for Your call to minister Your Word, and thank You for doing it through me—for without You, I can do nothing. I give You all the glory and all the praise.
In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.”
Beloved, ministering the Word in any capacity is a weighty assignment.
See the fruit that abounds to your account …
And still more fruit that remains …
And these are just the tip of the iceberg!
The call to tell others about Jesus, and to teach what His Word says, should not be taken lightly. We are all called to tell people about Him, too. As Jesus told us specifically in Matthew 28:
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV).
And since we are all called to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all things Jesus has commanded us (which are recorded in His Word), that means we all need God’s help to rightly divide the Word of truth.
Help us, Jesus! Have mercy on us and do this job through us and with us! Help us to rightly divide the Word of truth, Lord, and to speak as the oracles of God!
Beloved, do you tremble at God’s Word today?
Do you stand in holy fear and awe of the responsibility we each have to communicate His Word rightly? Do you know that you need His help to convey His Word accurately and powerfully to others?
