Beloved, do you love the way Jesus shines His light into your heart when you’re sad, lonely, or discouraged? Do you want Him to use you as a vessel of that same light to others? If so, pray, “Lord, let me be a beacon of light!” today!

During His ministry on earth, Jesus taught us both that He is the Light of the world and that you are the light of the world.

For example, we read that HE is the Light of the world in John 8:12:

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12 NKJV).

But we also read that we are the light of the world in Matthew 5:

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV).

If we put these things together, we can surmise that Jesus is the Light–capital “L”–because He is the Source and Fountain of all light and life. Scripture actually says this in Psalm 36:

“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light” (Psalm 36:7-9 NKJV).

But not only is Jesus the Light of the world, but He came to live inside you and me at the moment we gave our hearts to Him and made Him the Lord and Savior of our lives. So, since He now lives within you, that means His light is within you–and He, the Light of the world, is shining out of you and me, making us also the light (little “l”) of the world.

I love this promise because I need His light.

Every time I am lonely, sad, discouraged, or in any other low state of mind, I come to Jesus. As I pour my heart out to Him in prayer, read His Word, worship Him, thank Him, and praise Him (not always in that order), He always comforts me.

In those precious times, every time, He helps me set my mind on Him again, even if I accidentally took my eyes off Him and got discouraged. He fills me with His hope again, illuminating my spirit and soul with the light of His presence.

His light makes all the difference in the world, and I am grateful.

But friend, you and I and ALL the people around us need that same light of Jesus.

We need His light every day, just to survive. This sin-sick world is a tough place, and only Jesus makes it tolerable. Only Jesus makes life enjoyable, and only Jesus can bring light into every dark place.

The good news is that He wants to bring His light into the world–and shine His light into the heart of every person around us–through you and through me. If we will let Him, He will make each of us a beacon of His light, life, and hope.

And then, as we each go through our day, doing what we do, the world between our own two feet will look a little brighter as we brighten the day of every person with whom we come into contact.

Beloved, you are the light of the world because Jesus lives in you.

Do you want Him to use you to make a difference as you go through your day? Do you desire to be a beacon of light and life and hope to others, the same way Jesus is to you?

I know I sure do. I believe you do, also.

So, friend, pray this if you want to be a beacon of light to others today:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name.

Lord, I want to enter Your gates with thanksgiving right now, and into Your courts with praise. You are so good to me, even on days when I feel sad or down. You are always there for me; always faithful; always true; and You never waver. Thank You, Abba Father. I praise You for Your lovingkindness to me.

Abba Father, You are a beacon of light in my life.

Some days, I feel like You are the only light I have. And even when things look dark, I can look at You and see light, for You are the fountain of life. It is truly in Your light that I see light. Thank You, Lord.

Abba, this world is a dark and lonely place sometimes–for many people, not just for myself.

And I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have You to shine Your light abroad in my heart. I wouldn’t be able to live or survive at all, let alone thrive in any way. You are everything to me, and Your light is essential to even surviving this sin-sick world.

Lord, Your light means so much to me that I want to share it with others.

I want other people to have the same relief from darkness that You give me:

    • When I’m down, lonely, discouraged, hopeless, in despair, or in any other low emotional state–whether bad things happen or even if I’m just struggling in my emotions–You always give me light again.
    • You always fill me with the light of Your presence.
    • You always give me the fullness of joy and relief that come in Your presence, and only in Your presence.

I thank You for that, Abba Father.

Jesus, You are my everything. And I want other people to know You as their everything, too–just like I do.

So please, Holy Father: in Jesus’ name, I humbly ask that You would use me as a beacon of light to the people around me:

    • Let me be full of the light of Your presence at all times, Father.
    • Fill me with the joy of the Lord anew and afresh today.
    • Help me to set my eyes and keep them set on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
    • Let Your light shine and radiate out from me to all the people around me.
    • Fill me with the power of Your Holy Spirit.
    • Let Your glory be manifest and visible on me, and on my life.
    • Let Your light shine forth even from my words.
    • I pray that, whenever I am around another person, Your light would shine forth from me into them, and they would leave the encounter encouraged and lifted up by Your mighty Spirit.

O Jesus, You are the Light of the world.

You said that we who follow You shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life (John 8:12). I am following You, even when I follow imperfectly. Please forgive me for all those times when I do follow You imperfectly, Lord Jesus. I am so sorry for it. I want to do better at always focusing on Your light, and not on my circumstances.

But, even in my failings, I still ask today in Your precious name, Jesus, that You would be the Light of the world through me. Use me as a beacon of light everywhere I go. Let Your hope and life shine out from me everywhere I go, to bless and encourage and minister to those around me.

Only You can do this, Jesus. Only You can use me like this. But, I pray humbly that You would. And I ask it in Your name–the name of the Only True Light, and my Only True Light–Jesus Christ.

Thank You, Abba Father. In Jesus’ holy and precious name I pray, amen and amen.”
