Do you want to be a man or woman of fasting and prayer? Do you want to walk on miracle territory always? If so, then today’s prayer is for you. It will help you ask the Lord for unction to fast and pray so you can receive the divine hunger and motivation that makes prayer and fasting easy.
First, know that everyone can fast and everyone is called to fast.
I hear people say sometimes that they cannot fast because of this or that medical condition. However, what they mean is that they have been told that they have to fast a certain way (e.g. going without food completely or even skipping meals), and they cannot do that.
In that case, I completely understand. I actually cannot skip meals or go without food either because of some medical conditions I have. But, I still live a lifestyle of continuous fasting and prayer–and you can too.

One of the biggest keys to fasting is that how you fast and what you fast is between you and God.
So, even if you cannot skip meals or go without food altogether, you can find something from which to fast. For example:
- You could eat only soups, protein shakes, smoothies, and other liquids for a time, or even for one meal a day or two meals a day.
- Or, you could give up all sugar or desserts or breads for a time.
- You could go without your favorite soft drink or sweet tea.
- You could wait until after a certain time of day to eat your first meal.
The list is endless; ask the Lord and He will show you how to fast! It simply doesn’t matter what type of medical condition you have; you can find something you can sacrifice unto the Lord for a period of time.
But, also know that everyone IS called to fast.
Fasting is not supposed to be an option; it was a command of Jesus. Living a fasted livestyle is normal Christianity. In Matthew 6, Jesus said this:
“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly” (Matthew 6:16-18 NKJV).
Jesus said “when” you fast. The Greek word used there literally means “whenever.” In other words, fasting was to be a repetitive habit–something they frequently did.
(By the way, the pronouns in the passage above from Matthew 6 discuss both personal and corporate fasting. The personal fasting is supposed to be secret. The corporate fasting is not.)
And Joel 2:15 says that we should fast when we or even our nation is in need:
“Blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly” (Joel 2:15 NKJV).
Beloved, fasting and prayer is an enormous key to seeing God do great and mighty things on the earth.
But what if you don’t want to fast and pray?
What if you have no unction, no inspiration, and no motivation to pray and fast and fast and pray at all? Well, then you pray for the unction you need.
God’s grace is sufficient for us to help us fast and pray just like it is sufficient for us in anything. Your spirit may be willing, but your flesh may be weak. But His strength will still be made perfect in your weakness.
So are you ready to be made ready? 🙂 If so …
Pray this prayer for unction to fast and pray:
“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You in Jesus’ name. Thank You for Your mercy, and thank You for the blood of Jesus.
Thank You for allowing me to boldly come near Your throne of grace, where I may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. I ask in Jesus’ name that Your Holy Spirit would help me pray right now, and that He would intercede for me according to Your perfect will.
Father God, I need You right now. I don’t understand why my situation doesn’t line up with Your Word in every way.
You are blessing me so much, and I would never negate that or want to disrespect that. I do stand in holy fear and awe of You, Father, and I am beyond thankful for everything You have done. Thank You; I praise You, Lord.
However, You have promised so much more than I have yet received.
Lord, I am not going to get over into doubt and unbelief. Your Word is true and it abides forever. Your Word will not return to You void. You are faithful and just and true and righteous, and You are my Source, my Strength, and my Provider. So I know the problem is not with You.
But Father, I still need You to manifest the answers to all my prayers. I need You to do what You have promised me in Your Word that You would do. And if I need to do something differently, I need You to show me that.
I know that sometimes I might pray, and Your answer might come a long time later. I trust Your perfect timing because I trust You, Father. You truly are perfect in all of Your ways.
But, Your Word also says that You will give me the desires of my heart.
And I have asked You for the desires of my heart, but they have not yet arrived. Your Word says You have said yes to my prayers. You have heard my cries. You will take care of me in every way. But the tangible answers to many of the promises You have made me have not shown up yet, Lord.
Father, the fault is not on Your end. Therefore, the fault must be on my end.
And I desire to fast and pray from a right heart to root out any hindrance in myself, Lord. I desire to fast and pray and draw near to You.
I desire to fast and pray and for You to search me, O God, and know my heart; to try me and know my thoughts; to see if there be any wicked way in me–and if there is, to get it out!–and for You to lead me in Your way everlasting.
Abba Father, please grant me the unction to fast and pray, and to seek You with all my heart.
Make me hungry for You like I have never been before. Let my body, soul, and spirit cry out for the Living God. Draw me to Yourself; help me to seek You with a right heart. Fill me with motivation, wisdom, inspiration, and unction to seek You in faithful fasting and prayer.
And Father, as I seek You in fasting and prayer, I ask that You would both change me and work miracles on my behalf.
I have done everything I can to obey You, Father. If in any way I have sinned, convict me. Remove everything in my life and heart that is not of You. And after You purify me–and as You purify me–then please do great and mighty things for me that far exceed any miracles You have ever manifested for me.
Father, I ask in Jesus’ name that You would manifest ALL the answers to my prayers that I have prayed during this fast.
If there’s anything that’s not from You in my heart, root it out. Make me like You. And bless me and increase me as You have promised me, Lord–with the absolute highest, 100% blessing that You can possibly give me in every way.
Thank You, Holy Father. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen and amen.”
Friend, it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
That means He’ll help you do whatever He wants, and He’ll help you want to do it. He’ll help you fast, and He’ll help you want to fast. God will give you the unction to fast and pray if you will pray the prayer of faith and believe Him to help you.
And as you carry out your season of fasting and prayer, you will see miracles. His Word guarantees it.
