Prayer to Never Run Dry

Beloved, do you feel dry and weary to your very bones? Have you collapsed physically, emotionally, or spiritually? If so, Jesus wants to show Himself to you as the Fountain that never runs dry–and I have a sample prayer you can pray to never run dry as well.

O friend, if you are in a desperate state …

… dry and weary, desiring nothing more than for each day to be over as soon as it has begun …

… if hope deferred has made your heart sick, and you long with hopeless desperation for your desires to be fulfilled, and to be a tree of life to you …

… and if you are desperately weary, but willing to let Jesus minister to you right now …

… then hear me when I say that coming to the feet of Jesus is the right thing to do.

Dearly precious desperate one, you can have a fresh infilling of the Spirit today, so that you never run dry.

You can have this fresh infilling–this river of life flowing inside you again–if you’re desperate, or even if you’re not desperate but only desirous.

You can have it if you’re tired or if you feel well-rested.

You can have it if you’re fasting, and you can have it if you’re not fasting.

You can have this fresh infilling of Jesus, of His fire, His power, and His glory no matter what your circumstances are, as long as you are a child of God and you ask in faith and believe. We know this because His Word says:

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11 NKJV).

And if you desperately need to be refreshed in your spirit, you’ve come to the right place when you come to Jesus; for He has promised you to renew, refresh, and restore your soul.

As His Word says in Psalm 23:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake” (Psalm 23:1-3 NKJV).

Let’s look at a few Scriptures that promise you an inner refilling from the Lord, so that you never run dry:

First, although you don’t have to be fasting to receive from the Lord, if you do happen to be fasting, there’s a powerful promise you can claim over your fasting.

In Isaiah 58, the Lord specifically promises something special to His children who are fasting rightly. And “fasting rightly” means, among other things, taking care of the poor during your fast.

When you fast and pray and take care of the poor, look at how He promises that you “shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail”:

“If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness shall be as the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones; you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail” (Isaiah 58:10-11 NKJV).

But what about if you’re not fasting?

Is there a promise you can claim if you’re not fasting? Absolutely! Look at what Jesus said to all of us:

“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life’” (John 4:13-14 NKJV).

In this passage, Jesus promises that He will give you water that will cause you to never thirst again. When you drink of the water that Jesus gives you, you will never run dry. Instead, the spiritual “water” that Jesus gives you is an infilling of His Spirit that doesn’t diminish with the using.

When Jesus refills you with His Spirit, He brings you His sustenance, His manifest presence, comfort, power, refreshment, joy, and rejuvenation for your spirit, soul, and body. This is how He restores your soul as your Good Shepherd. And this living water is freely available to you.

And look at what He did for the widow of Zarephath, too!

The widow of Zarephath was a single mom with no money and no hope, but the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to her. And, it turns out that Elijah’s entrance into her life is what saved her life and her son’s life. Read how it happened here, from 1 Kings 17:

“Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ‘Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.’

So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, ‘Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.’

And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, ‘Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.’ So she said, ‘As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.’

And Elijah said to her, ‘Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth’” (1 Kings 17:8-14 NKJV, emphasis mine).

So the Lord gave the widow of Zarephath unlimited flour and oil–provision that would never run dry until she didn’t need it anymore. And it doesn’t say she was fasting, either; she was simply desperate.

And God heard her desperation. (Later on, that same widow’s son got sick and died, and Elijah raised him from the dead. God provided for her in more than one way, praise the Lord!)

Are you desperate too, friend?

If so, I want you to know today that God hears you. He sees you; He knows you; and He actually dwells within you, if you have given your life and heart to Jesus.

And He is not ignoring your cry.

If you need reassurance of this, read this powerful verse from Psalm 22:24:

“For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; nor has He hidden His face from Him; but when He cried to Him, He heard” (Psalm 22:24 NKJV).

God has not despised or looked down upon your cry or your affliction.

He is right there with you in it all, and He is hearing every one of your cries …

… And He is helping you.

Look at Psalm 22:26, just two verses after He promises that He hears your cry:

“The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever!” (Psalm 22:26 NKJV).

O beloved, God is with you. And He will fulfill your petition!

I know it takes time sometimes to see Him bring you, or do for you, all that you have asked Him to do or bring. But He IS hearing you right now, and He loves you, and He is right there with you in it.

And while you wait, He can restore your soul so that you never run dry.

Do you need your soul to be restored? Are you desperate for a fresh infilling of the Lord’s fresh oil, and for the new wine of His Spirit to flow through your body and heart?

I know I am. I have been begging God for a fresh infilling of the holy, fresh oil of His Spirit. And it has taken a lot of time sitting in His presence for me to let the stress and cares of this world fall away, and to be able to lift up my eyes to Him and focus on Him clearly.

But, as I have taken the time to do this–begging Him for help every moment–I can feel that He has been giving me His fresh oil and new wine. Glory be to His name!

And our God is no respecter of persons.

The promises of God are ‘yes’ and ‘amen’; and, if He said it in His Word, He will do it for you. The promises of God apply to you, not just to everybody else. And that means you can claim them right now, pray them right now, and receive them right now.

Yes, my beloved friend: right now, this very moment, He will refill you with oil that never runs dry.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come before You in Jesus’ name.

Abba Father, You are so good, and Your mercy endures forever. Thank You for being my dependable and faithful Father.

You are so steady and merciful, Abba. Even when I am buffeted about by the world, You are not. You are the Rock that is higher than I, and I thank You for it today, Lord.

Holy Father, in Jesus’ name, I come to You today and I ask You to refill me with the fresh oil and new wine of your Spirit:

• Fill me up again, anew and afresh, all the way to overflowing.
• Let the rain of your Spirit soak and permeate through my entire soul, for I’ve been feeling so dry–and I desperately need you to bring me back to life.
• Let your living water flow through me and slosh through every thought, every habit, every tendency, every plan, every heartache, every bit of fatigue or despondency, and every goal, dream, and desire in my body, soul, and spirit.
• Refresh, renew, and encourage me today, as only You can do.
• Please fill me with the fresh fire of Your presence. Help me to burn again with love and passion for you!
• Restore my enthusiasm for You, and for life. Help me to truly enjoy things again, and to have live abundantly.
• Awaken in me once again a tremendous heart of gratitude. I ought to be thanking You every moment of every day, Father. Please help me to do so.
• Please help me to take an interest in every area of life again. Give me pep and verve to have joy in daily activities, instead of waking up and wishing that the day would be over.
• Help me to be proactive again, instead of being intimidated and overwhelmed by everything. Please help me not to be concerned at all when I look at hard things that need to be done, but to just jump up and do them with no problem!
• Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit AND all His fruit; let the fruit of the Spirit–including JOY–be prominent and visible in every aspect of my life.
• Let Your joy, which is my strength, fill me up to overflowing!
• And because of Your Spirit and power flowing through me, please help me to have a great day today and every day!

Abba Father, in Jesus’ name, I remind You:

• That You gave the widow of Zarephath provision, sustenance, and help that never ran dry.
• You gave me Your Son Jesus, Who promised me living water springing up out of my belly unto eternal life.
• Your Word says that You will not withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly.
• And You promised me that the water You give me will become in me a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.

Abba Father, I’ve been feeling stuck in what has felt like eternal suffering, depletion, and dryness–not sloshing and swimming in the eternal, everlasting, joy-filled oil of Your Holy Spirit. But I want that to change today, Lord. And You are the only One Who can help me.

Lord, give me the water that will cause me to never thirst again!

Please fill me again with hope, for hope deferred has made my heart sick. Give me this water You speak of, Lord Jesus, and breathe on me.

Fill me up in my body, soul, and spirit with Your power. Breathe on me and everything that pertains to me, and fill me with Your water, Your fire, Your refreshment, renewal, power, provision, and encouragement, so that I will never run dry.

Thank You, Abba Father. Thank You, Lord Jesus. And thank You, Holy Spirit. Thank You for Your living water that never runs dry.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen and amen.”

Friend, let’s review just two of our key Scriptures for today again.

Pray this one if you’re desperate for a refilling from the Father–a refreshment and renewal that never runs dry:

“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life’” (John 4:13-14 NKJV).

And if you happen to be fasting (or if you decide to start fasting now, even one meal) and caring for the poor while you’re at it, then pray, remember, and claim this Scripture too:

Beloved, Jesus is the Fountain that never runs dry.

If you will call on Him today, He will be faithful and just to fill you up, anew and afresh, with His Spirit, His fire, His power, and His glory–and He will be in you a well springing up unto eternal life, Whose waters do not fail.
